Even in darkness, we glow. In this image of Earth taken by the Artemis II crew, we can see the electric lights of human activity. In the lower right, sunlight illuminates the limb of the planet.

We see our home planet as a whole, lit up in spectacular blues and browns. A green aurora even lights up the atmosphere. That's us, together, watching as our astronauts make their journey to the Moon.

How do scientists actually search for extraterrestrial intelligence? In a recent SETI Live conversation, astronomer and Drake Award winner Dr. Jason Wright addressed that question through the lens of his new textbook, The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence: Theory and Practice, the first modern effort to bring the full scope of SETI into a single, structured framework. The timing is not accidental. SETI has moved far beyond its early identity as a radio experiment. Today, it is a rapidly expanding scientific field with its own methodologies, literature, and interdisciplinary reach. The textbook grew out of more than a decade of teaching. What began as a graduate seminar evolved into undergraduate and graduate courses at Penn State, culminating in an astrobiology PhD program spanning multiple disciplines.
