2 hours to get through passport control at Charles de Gaulle people missing their flights, someone has brought out an accordion and somewhere I can hear a guillotine being sharpened. Never let tourists come to South Africa and roll their eyes and make snarky comments.

The problem with casting a closer relationship with Europe as the solution to the world's current economic malaise is that it kind of misses the point. The key problem at present is a shortage of ENERGY. Europe has an energy deficit. Up until 2022 it filled that gap with gas from Russia. Now it fills that gap with gas (and oil) from the US and Middle East. It swapped one dependency for another. We can debate whether that dependency is inevitable, the extent to which it's a function of geology and/or political decisions taken years ago. Regardless, right now Europe is highly exposed to the problems in the Gulf. And without US energy imports it is in BIG trouble. A closer relationship between the UK and the EU does not solve this conundrum.

The UK is “fully committed to NATO” but is seeking “closer ties with Europe”. The PM was asked about recent comments by Donald Trump threatening to pull out of the NATO alliance. Latest: trib.al/eqUSRJK 📺 Sky 501 and YouTube

I understand some people hate the left. I understand that some people are conservative. I understand some people are nationalists. But what I don’t understand is why anyone, whatever their world view, would be unable to see Trump for what he is as a human being. It’s a simple matter of basic judgement. He is unfit. Utterly unfit.

You want the NATO allies to join you in a war you started without ever consulting these allies about the war or explaining your war aims. We’re meant just to meekly fall in line. You recently supported a US invasion of a NATO ally (Denmark/Greenland) but now you want these same allies to join your war. Your president disparaged and misrepresented the role of NATO allies in Afghanistan. But now you want them to join with you again in a war of your making. You went to war with Iran without a thought of how to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and without involving your allies in the matter. But now you want the NATO allies to bail you out, even though there’s still no plan for Hormuz. You want the NATO allies to join you in a war in which you still cannot articulate the endgame. Or what victory would look like. You went to war thinking the Iranian regime would quickly topple, that Tehran would not attack the Gulf States or close Hormuz. Why would we align with such Epic Stupidity? You and other know-nothing blowhards started this war all on your own. You can finish it on your own. If you’re able to …
Lindsey Graham@LindseyGrahamSC

Just spoke to @POTUS about our European allies’ unwillingness to provide assets to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning, which benefits Europe far more than America. I have never heard him so angry in my life. I share that anger given what’s at stake. The arrogance of our allies to suggest that Iran with a nuclear weapon is of little concern and that military action to stop the ayatollah from acquiring a nuclear bomb is our problem not theirs is beyond offensive. The European approach to containing the ayatollah’s nuclear ambitions have proven to be a miserable failure. The repercussions of providing little assistance to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning are going to be wide and deep for Europe and America. I consider myself very forward-leaning on supporting alliances, however at a time of real testing like this, it makes me second guess the value of these alliances. I am certain I am not the only senator who feels this way.

🇿🇦My offer for R5,2bn (debt free net asset value then) was ignored, and now (after writing off R7,4bn of debt, injecting R2,4bn and R250m+ on BRP’s) you’ll need to pay someone R5,2bn to resuscitate it - instead, you’ll sell it to scavengers for it’s remains … disgraceful!😡😢🇿🇦@News24

Remember during peak Eskom rolling blackouts it emerged that taxpayers paid for politicians’ generators, filled with taxpayer diesel, to keep their lights on. Who do you think paid for that shower? And who else got to use that shower? How many hotel bookings? When?
