Her worst impact was her extreme sustained winds, which produced tornado-like damage over a massive swath of the island’s western side. Melissa is now the 5TH “M” name Atlantic Hurricane to be retired in the last 10 years, following Matthew (2016), Maria (2017), Michael (2018), and Milton (2024).

The 2026 West Pacific Typhoon Season has officially begun with the formation of Tropical Storm Nokaen (AdaPH) just offshore of the Philippines. All of this chunky ice convection could cause a serious flooding threat on Samar Island as Nokaen crawls in from the east, though she is not expected to make a direct landfall there and may instead curve back out into the Philippine Sea.
