I spent some time looking at this mesh network simulation, and to be honest... The difference is not even close. They're looking at three different ways that data moves around in a network. > First, uncoded gossip is the simplest way. Nodes just send on whatever they get. It seems easy, but it makes a mess. The same packets keep coming back, bandwidth is wasted, and decoding takes the longest (about 5.9 seconds). > Next is Reed–Solomon, where coding is done at the source. Yes, it makes things better, but the problem is still there. Nodes keep sending fixed pieces, so a lot of data that overlaps still moves around. Better than gossip, but not good for big groups (around 1.65 seconds to decode) > Now for the interesting part:- RLNC instead of sending packets that are always the same nodes send coded sets and not just the source; every node in between also re-codes. So every packet that comes in is useful, with no duplicates and no wasted bandwidth. [ That's why it finishes much faster (about 175ms) and uses much less bandwidth. ] > This is the main difference Data just moves in normal systems. With RLNC, the network itself is part of the coding process. That makes everything different. same nodes, same network, but a very different result The infrastructure isn't the real upgrade.
