I don't love the way the feds have designed and deployed its supports here. I'm sympathetic to arguments made by people like @acoyne and @mattgurney.
But we need a more serious conversation about what we should do in their place. And "nothing" isn't a serious answer.

Here's a genuine answer for Sean.
I think his question is a bit of a straw man, since it's not at all clear to me that Bruce is being "subsidized" any more than the opinion writers at the National Post or Calgary Herald are.

Here’s a genuine question for proponents of journalism subsidies: if the case for public subsidies is that news and reporting (particularly local news) is facing a market failure, what’s the argument for subsidizing opinion columnists? How is it in the public interest that columnists are effectively sheltered from market forces? Why in other words are taxpayers forced to subsidize the employment of people like Bruce Arthur?
