A prospective PhD student should look for a kind and understanding mentor, not necessarily the most brilliant one or someone working at a prestigious institution. A kind mentor will focus on your progress and work to uplift you.

Big day for neuroscience & the end of the beginning for whole brain connectomics. Shout out to @sdorkenw and Philipp Schlegel, first authors of the connectome papers, @MurthyLab @SebastianSeung for establishing #flywire to make this possible and @dddavi for birthing this dataset.
FlyWire@FlyWireNews

Big news! The fly connectome is featured on the cover of a special edition of Nature. This is all possible thanks to the collaboration of 292 members of The FlyWire Consortium! nature.com/immersive/d428… Check out the thread for an overview of the 9 #flywire papers published today

Here’s some eye candy - or should we say fly candy - for those of you who’ve stuck around to the end. Shoutout to @quorumetrix @exp_perception @amyneurons who help us make all the gorgeous renders :)

Did you know? Canada’s population of people aged 100 or older more than tripled between 2000 and 2023, up from 3,393 to 11,705. That makes centenarians the fastest growing age group in Canada. #NationalSeniorsDay

The APL neuron is the longest cell in the fly connectome. There are only 2 in the brain. Each one is 20x longer than the fly's whole body and has well over 100,000 synapses. Explore the fantastic APL cell in Codex: codex.flywire.ai/app/cell_detai…

@arielframe @albertosanzmon1 @ctmurphy1 @RKaletsky Definitely agree - we hope that our data will contribute to a comparative biology approach to understand what cell types reprogramming will benefit! Effect of OSK on mouse RGCs seems impressive, but maybe not all neurons will benefit similarly

This is a fascinating study. I've often wondered: if we can't rejuvenate a worm, how can we expect to rejuvenate a mouse or even a human being? While I'm a strong proponent of reprogramming, aren't we at risk of overselling its potential at this stage?

Chemical Ecology lost a pillar, Entomology lost a giant, RES and ESA lost a Fellow and Honorary FRES, we lost a friend and colleague, and the world lost a fantastic human being. Jeremy is irreplaceable—he was one of a kind. Let His Memory Be A Blessing! Requiesce in pace, Jeremy.

My favorite line from our editorial "Overall, technological advances in neuroscience follow a repetitive pattern: If you wish to know where brain science in general will be in the future, you might look at what #Drosophila researchers are doing now." 🪰🧠😈💅
