@JakeCan72 The total amount of water collected behind these dams totals about 40 acre feet; enough to fill almost 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools. These man-made reservoirs feature boat docks, boats, and were stocked by Harrington with trout and Bluegill for recreational fishing.

@JakeCan72 Harrington [placed] dams across channels on his property and preventing the flow of water out of these artificial reservoirs...two dams stand about ten feet tall and the third stands about 20 feet tall. kcby.com/news/local/eag…

In Oregon, all water is publicly owned. Rain that falls on your property. Snow that melts on your land. Gary Harrington didn’t accept that. He built three reservoirs on his 170-acre property in Eagle Point — collecting rainwater and snowmelt for personal use and wildfire protection. The state told him to drain the reservoirs. He refused. 30 days in jail. Nine misdemeanor convictions. $1,500 fine. His argument: it’s rain that fell on my land. Oregon’s argument: all water belongs to us. Oregon won.

@sdrace928 @LizaRosen0000 @JohnCleese I don't understand. I was under the impression that before October 7th all of Gaza was an open air prison. That top picture looks like a nice, modern city.

t.co/bW6aEBBLoK Absolute panic erupted among Palestinian UN staffers during this brutal takedown by British Colonel Richard Kemp. He refused to play along with the disgusting false narrative that paints Israel as the evil “Islamophobic aggressor” and Palestinian-Muslim terrorists as poor “victims” of oppression. This was a rare historic moment at the UN: one honest British colonel stood up and silenced the entire room of hypocrites who cheer Hamas’s baby-killing, rape, and murder of Jews — then scream “genocide” the second Israel defends its people. The sheer absurdity of UN bureaucrats losing their minds when someone dares to tell the truth about Islamic terror is peak clown world. Colonel Kemp spoke facts they can’t handle. Share this widely. The world needs more voices like his.

@jodiecongirl Mostly yes, but voluntary food restriction to lose weight has a long-term failure rate of over 90%. Matthews' comment is akin to telling a depressed person they could think happy thoughts instead of taking meds.

@millie_hillie @MediumSizeMeech When my grandfather was literally on his deathbed, a nurse came by and put her hand under his gown to check something. He opened one eye, looked at her and said, "I pay cash".

@MediumSizeMeech Old men hitting on you is like a nursing student rite of passage. You’re helping drugged up old men (and women!!!) who can’t pee on their own get around. Half the time they make a gross joke to make it feel less awkward for them. That’s just real life!

i think the 3 newbie arcs being a person who didn’t want to be in the ED and sticking to that despite a natural gift for it, a man who wanted to be great in the ED but was crushed by it, and a young girl who was deeply traumatized but still left with hope, meant a lot actually

Something people don't talk about so much these days is that in post-WW2 America, people took Freudian psychoanalysis very seriously for some reason.

@jbarro Sadly, veterinary care in the US has become a grift. Thanks to companies like VCA, a lot of vets focus on squeezing as much money out of pet owners as possible. Just part of the general enshittification of our society.

"Spinal surgery for dogs is now a luxury for the rich" doesn't have the same ring as certain other affordability concerns
Helaine Olen@helaineolen

My latest for @NYMag: The rise of pet medical tourism. Fed up with high veterinary prices in the US, pet "parents" in Southern California are heading to Mexico. "A spinal surgery for a pet in America can cost $12,000 to $18,000. Even rich people can’t afford that.”

@SamMacD86958750 @sarhanis @dilanesper Because it's good for the sport. It opens competition up to a wider group of people, encourages more people to participate and generates more interest. Watching the hulk-sized guys lift is impressive, but seeing the smaller guys compete is also fun.

this is the "Michael Phelps argument". "Every athlete has genetic advantages. Why does this one matter?" And the answer is it's the advantage we defined the category around. If we defined a swimming category Michael Phelps doesn't fall within, he can't compete either.
thereisnobeth@thereisnobeth

importantly this will also be used to exclude intersex women from competing bc we've arbitrarily decided that genetic advantage is cheating but all the other ones Olympians tend to have are fine

@Remnicore_ They made some films using one of the most popular IPs in the world. A majority of the fans of that IP didn't like those films. Somehow this is the fans' fault.

The Last Duel (2021) was well reviewed but only made about $30 million on a $100 million budget. Ridley Scott blamed “millennials,” saying they “don’t ever want to be taught anything unless it’s on the phone.”
