I was born in Ireland and grew up in Ireland; it was an almost completely homogenous country.
But over the last 20 years things have changed, and since 2020, that change has accelerated.
Modern-day Ireland feels like a foreign country to me.

More migrants also means more consumption, as seen here.
Migration actually lifts productivity & real wages.

This is why I feel so much disgust whenever some dipshit says something like, "all that money they spent on going to space could have been spent on helping the homeless." No amount of money given to the government will ever solve a problem that has nothing to do with a lack of funding. If you give the government more money, they just use it to expand the bureaucracy. They hire more middlemen, open more departments, require more paperwork, all for no reason other than to justify their spending. It's intentionally designed from the ground up to be slow, inefficient, and wasteful in order to keep people working unnecessary jobs employed. The money doesn't go to the homeless. It goes to contractors and pencil pushers, and some politician skims off the top.

Dumb infrastructure (and high-speed rail to Quebec City is indeed shockingly dumb) is the absolute, never-fail, 10/10 sign of a dysfunctional country. Failed states can't do much, but what they can do very well is litter landscapes with pointless monuments to their own vanity.
