I've been exploring numeral systems with middle school kids this past year, and I'm excited to share what I've learned so far at CMC South. We will engage in math activities, hear from students, and learn about a few numeral systems from history. #cmcmath @CAMathCouncil

@julierwright Yes! Same. Is the 8th grade one about deriving y=mx +b from y=mx supposed to include all of that?! I guess so....but make it clear!

I find it kind of horrifying that it is really unclear which math standard(s) address writing or graphing equations in slope-intercept form or identifying them from graphs. If you can find it (aside from implicitly, e.g. with systems), let me know.

@ddmeyer Rolling stamps that would *actually* be useful: ~ Rectangle maker so students can make area models ~ Base ten blocks ~ A number line? (That's kind of a lame one) Oh I know there *must* be other really cool use cases for a rolling stamper... 🤔🤔🤔

Agree! I started asking my class an "attendance question" at the start of class every day (who do you look up to, what's the best superhero movie, etc.) and it's done so much to build community. I feel like I know more about my students this year than in years past.

Question for #MTBoS folks: what do you find helps students who get stuck on math problems due to not seeing a first step to take? I'm trying usual stuff (break problem down into smaller parts, list info you do know, etc.), but I'm curious what additional approaches people have

@StephDoesMath @MathTeach_BEW In teaching about math, I need to be able to speak at a high, plain, and simple level about the point of middle school math, and also have mastery over the operations. I think the same is true about teaching about teaching, including issues about equity & justice.

Couldn’t find a task on finding the equations of linear graphs which had the variation in the scaling of the axes that I wanted so I’ve made this. There’s some nice discussion to be had around 1&4 (same equation, ‘look’ different) and 5&6 (‘look’ the same, different equation)

Differentiation continues to be the most overused and under-executed term in education. It’s because differentiation can’t just be a series of one-off strategies. It needs to be the backbone of instructional models and necessitates constant 1-1 and small-group discussion.

@KentHaines I can see it help some teachers shift their perception of students ideas because the language encourages us to see value in what kids do think and know even if they are "wrong."

@KentHaines I think if Ts already believe that kids are coming to the table with lots of ideas(ie conceptions) about math that may or may not be "right" and that our job is to understand their thinking+engage with their reasoning.....the "it's not a misconception" feels annoying. But 1/2
