@mossmouth This is a lesson I took away from the Spelunky when making my own love letter to it. Bringing a demo to various conventions and seeing people first hand comming to terms with this philosophy was very exciting and I must say informative too. It’s art hard to find the audience for.

When I was a kid, there were many games I loved but could never "beat". I left them unbeaten but kept them in my memories, until as an adult I picked them up again and persevered to the end, feeling fully satisfied at completing the journey after such a long time. 💘

IMHO there are certain types of games that allow the player to overcome odds that feel "impossible". In those games, the developer may choose not to include dynamic difficulty settings, in order to encourage exploration and also emphasize personal growth over "beating the game".
