I worked at a Transformer company. The reason that most transformers are outsourced to China is not the cost of copper, or the cost of labor. It’s the cost of the Electrical Steel used for the E&I or Torroid. Not only is the cost of virgin Electrical Steel a fraction of the cost in China, China also leads the world in recycled Electrical Steel.
Almost all giant Transformers are sent to China for scrap. They disassemble the transformers and reclaim the sheets of electrical steel, reusing them in new transformers. They don’t need to melt down the steel, roll new sheets, and stamp new E&I’s. They just need to rewind them with new copper wire. Pennies on the dollar.

The US imports 82% of its large power transformers. Only 8 to 10 domestic factories can build them. Chinese transformer shipments to the US went from 1,500 units in 2022 to over 8,000 by October 2025. Now Hitachi is building a $457M transformer plant in Virginia and Hyundai broke ground on a $200M expansion in Alabama last month.

This is what Ukraine is up against with respect to fiber optic FPVs. The Chinese-Russian collaboration PGI Technologies has this installation of high speed fiber optic cable winding machines. Two shifts produce 1200 coils per shift, for 36,000 coils per month.

@DeltaClimbs @valaratomics @SantiagoPliego Not directly. We need abundant energy for everything. You need a transformer to help move the electrons across long distances, and then step it back down for usability. Transmission is probably a bigger issue than transformers TBH.
