Major League Baseball is aired in the morning for Japan. So technically they eat breakfast with it being on television. Here’s their #openingday commercial. No hyperbole, when I say this, it might be greater than any US MLB commercial I’ve seen. Well done and worth the watch for any baseball fan.

@MarchMadnessMBB I bet on St John's to win so don't really mind, but that's an obvious travel on the catch. He had his right foot flat on the ground (immediately becomes pivot) and maybe his left toe, too. Then he did a hop into a dribble. Can't move pivot before dribbling.

If you have a cold and you want it to go away faster, consider taking a zinc lozenge. Aggregating data from three randomized placebo-controlled trials, it seems lozenges cut down the time people are sick by ~40%. By day 5, 70% were cured with lozenges versus 27% with placebo.

@settostun @cremieuxrecueil Zicam has no citric acid, but it has stearic acid and flavourings (maybe those can include citric acid??). I don't know if stearic acid is as bad as citric acid Otherwise seems legit

@cremieuxrecueil WRONG 😑 The studies that show efficacy never talk about OTC lozenges, which have citric acid that binds zinc ions into a useless topically zinc citrate. We simply don’t have an OTC lozenge that works. Waste of money. Search for “citric” pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC54…

@MiguelGBTC @cremieuxrecueil Seems long-term use can cause problems (eg with copper absorption), but I think short-term use (a week or less) shouldn't be a problem, no?

@danicajdillion Thanks, sounds like appreciable effect. How should I think about social network density? Why vary so much by county? Does it often scale w pop density or some other social property? (I get that you studied social network density for a reason, just trying to grok it better.)

The standardized beta here is about .11 (fairly typical of regional psych analyses), with a 10% increase in density associated with about a 2% decrease in partisan animosity. To put that in perspective, partisan animosity has increased by about 15% since 2016, so if a county starting at today’s average level of animosity doubled its density, we’d expect animosity levels better than those of 2016 (~20% reduction).

Americans are growing more socially isolated and politically divided. Could these two forms of disconnection be linked? Our new paper in @appliednetsci suggests that people with denser, more connected social networks often feel less partisan animosity. 🧵

@QJeffR @MenInBlazers If you're American born and bred, USA should be your main team. We're often plucky underdogs in soccer, it's an interesting role for us. Cool to have Uruguay as a second team, cheer for them when they're playing anyone but USA.

There's a lot of truth to this. Wherever we have data, we see this repeated: Communists tend to be downwardly mobile. They are, always and everywhere, disproportionately likely to be their generation's losers. Consider this Finnish data on the Red and White Guards:

Next, we zoomed out to the county level. Using data from the Social Capital Atlas and Project Implicit (79,819 people), we found that counties with denser social networks showed lower partisan animosity—even after accounting for population, politics, demographics, and inequality.

@LuluOrange63280 @cremieuxrecueil @IPostAndGhost It depends on where you're talking about. At the beginning of the 20th century, Jews in Germany tended to be urban, assimilated, and well-off, while Jews in Russia were mostly poor peasants facing significant discrimination.

@cremieuxrecueil @IPostAndGhost This is a bit misleading. At the beginning of the 20th century ashkenazi Jews were mostly poor, lower class, and highly discriminated. They were attracted to Communism at least partly because communism falsely promised to end the discrimination.
