The Colossus of Rhodes .... In antiquity, the Colossus of Rhodes (also known as the Colossus of Rhodes or Kolossos Rhódios) was a massive bronze statue of the Greek sun god Helios and is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The statue was located in the ancient Rhodian site on the northern tip of Rhodes Island (specifically near or at the entrance to the present-day Mandraki Harbor (Mandrákion)). It was erected in 305-304 BC to celebrate the victory and give thanks to the gods after the Rhodians successfully repelled a year-long siege by Demetrius I Poliorketes (the Antigonids) of Macedonia. The remains of the war machines from the siege were melted down and dismantled. It was designed by the sculptor Charles of Lindos. Construction began in 292 BC, lasted 12 years, and was completed around 280 BC. It was approximately 32-33 meters (70 cubits) tall – close to the height of the modern Statue of Liberty from foot to the top of the pier. Its iron information was inscribed on bronze plates. According to popular (but technically impossible according to modern research) belief, the statue walked on two legs through the harbor entrance, with sections passing between ships (a medieval legend). The current academic view is that the statue stood in one piece on a hill/pedestal overlooking the harbor (on one side).
