The protest, organized by Palestina Demonstration Stockholm, called for the release of Palestinian “doctor” Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, whom Israel says is a Hamas colonel. The demonstration included a man dressed as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with fake blood covering his head and clothes, portraying him beneath the mock Auschwitz gate alongside depictions of Gazan mothers and babies. The Netanyahu figure was also shown waving a wad of cash. Aaron Verstandig, chairman of the Official Council of Swedish Jewish Communities, called the display "incredibly distasteful and abhorrent," while Swedish Jewish academic Dr. Daniel Schatz said the protest's use of Holocaust imagery constitutes a clear example of antisemitism under the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's working definition, which Sweden has adopted.
