Tonight's aurora was pretty extraordinary. Here is a real-time video showing the rapid motion and vivid colors. All I could do while watching this was smile and laugh.. it's a pretty unique feeling seeing the sky move like this. Good night!

Big Surprise Hit! Multiple solar storms launched over the past several days, with most expected to be glancing blows. But one of them is hitting early and more on target than predictions show. Upstream satellite monitors indicate a strong impact, with a large southward field, meaning aurora is building quickly. Along with the fast wind already hitting, this means Earth is preconditioned to storm. Expect G3, possibly G4 levels with this one!

Will we see anything from this X flare later?? The lack of noticeable radiation snowstorming on LASCO is keeping me from getting too excited... Will know soon enough I suppose...

I have been working on 3D visualizations for the model runs and it looks like the western edge of the storm will pass southward of Earth. Thus we will rely heavily on the stream interaction for the bulk of the storm. Here is the NASA M2M lemniscate model coupled with my coronagraph fit at STEREO-A.

NASA model is in, get those cameras ready

The NASA M2M office is on it! Their model run shows the western edge of this storm may compress the SIR ahead of it, thanks to the fast wind from the coronal hole. So although the blast wave did get damped at its western flank, it looks like compression of the coming SIR might make up for the loss. This means aurora photographers, get ready for some action March 31!

It is a lopsided full-halo CME in LASCO C2 images. The bulk is going SE, but there is a faint halo shock front.
