One of the many fascinating life stories of people in Israel is the story of celebrity chef Tom Franz. Born in Germany to a Catholic family and a grandfather who was in the Nazi Wermacht, Franz came to Israel to volunteer after high school. He then went back to Europe, got a degree in law and economics and went to work in a bank. In 1990 he came back to Israel to volunteer helping Holocaust survivors. Franz then decided to convert to Judaism, and became an orthodox Jew. He married an Israeli and together they have five children. Franz writes popular recipe books and appears on television often.

This specific orange butterfly was chosen because it previously held the name "Orange Jerusalem," and Ariel is recognized as one of the 70 names for Jerusalem, according to Kveller 🎗️

Paul Finlayson, a well-liked, non-Jewish professor at a small Canadian university, was suspended, silenced, and ultimately lost his career after expressing support for Israel in a online exchange with a Pakistani fan of Hamas soon after October 7. He writes that the university removed him without clear charges, barred him from communicating with students or colleagues, and allowed false rumors to spread that he had committed violent acts and was arrested —all entirely fabricated. Another faculty member who had publicly expressed support for Hamas seems to have been instrumental in this nightmare. The university and union all turned against him without giving him even the chance to defend himself. The result was not just discipline, but reputational destruction. A longtime lecturer was isolated, silenced, defamed, and slandered. Finlayson may not be Jewish but this is a horrific story of extreme antisemitism where even expressing a pro-Israel opinion can be career-ending. See his full account here:. My mom just called me from Iran through her landline. I haven’t spoken to her since February. She said that Israel and the US are bombing the regime nonstop. They taped all the windows because the building shakes constantly.
