It’s not uncommon in Europe to attend a university that is older than 600-700 years. Challenge is to keep teaching quality and quality of graduates high now that we are sending about 40% of students (rather than a tiny share of society back in the day) to university.

@politicshome The framing this sort of journalism elects to adopt discourages politicians from being honest. Evidence shows this clearly true for all parties, but you make the story “this one admits it!” as if thats somehow worse than lying to you or pretending any party is all over it.

@Simmons__ Divide and rule eh. Heaven forbid people that need support don’t just sit in their house all day being miserable & anyone makes potentially fun activities remotely affordable for them. Why try stoke the politics of envy in this way just to make someone else’s life worse?

I finally discovered why they are doing this! The new Kindle devices have ads in them, which you have to pay extra to remove them. I’m assuming they couldn’t put ads on the old Kindles. Sooner or later the ads will play every other page! We live in corporate hell now!

Question for everyone If someone responds to your question of “how’s it going?” with “it’s going” would you think they are happy? What if they then went on to elaborate a reason they shouldn’t be online doing what they are, would you be proud they are online helping you?

I can't remember who said it, but once again we require the observation that if you took the most annoying, room-clearing, "all politicians are corrupt" pub bore, they would nonetheless have a better understanding of our politics than most people who are paid to have one.

Correction not record profits every year, just record profits for years on end then as we finally get angry enough they tone it down a touch. Of course if you recognise this and talk about it, you’re a conspiracy theorist and John doesn’t have to engage with any of your argument

@JohnRentoul Energy companies are making record profits, year on year no matter what happens they do better. You can pretend that isn’t happening (for what purpose?) all you like but you can’t change the reality that they are indeed engaged in profiteering

The Greens seem to believe that the oil price rise is caused by the war but also by “reckless profiteering”, which can be “repurposed” so that no “ordinary” person in Britain has to pay a penny more
