It’s also one of our busiest times, with Spring Break crowds filling the South Rim. If you’re planning to visit, here are two easy ways to avoid the biggest crowds: • ⏰ Arrive early (before 9 am) or later in the day (after 4 pm) • 🚍 Park once, then use the free shuttle buses — instead of searching for limited parking 🔥 Important: An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect this weekend. Temperatures in the inner canyon are expected to break records — making conditions dangerous for hiking during midday. • 🥾 Avoid strenuous hiking during the hottest part of the day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.). • 💧 Drink plenty of water and balance water intake with food or electrolytes. • ☀️ Plan ahead and know your limits—heat illness can happen quickly in the Inner Canyon. During peak midday heat, consider visiting the Village Historic District, walking the Canyon Rim Trail, or touring scenic overlooks. • 🚌 Tour Hermit Road on free shuttles. Oh look. A prehistoric swamp log with legs. This trail camera caught a large American alligator cruising through Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge. It looks slow, but don’t be fooled. Over short distances, alligators can sprint up to about 11 miles per hour on land.

A collection of roughly 6,000-year-old hunting weapons has been uncovered in southern Texas. Archaeologists excavating a rock shelter called San Esteban, located near the Rio Grande in the Big Bend region, discovered a well-preserved cache of prehistoric tools. The area is considered one of the longest continuously inhabited regions in North America. Since 2019, researchers from the Center for Big Bend Studies and the University of Kansas have been studying the site. Inside the dry shelter, they found wooden shafts wrapped in leather, stone projectile points, and components of complex hunting weapons that survived millennia due to the arid conditions. Among the key finds were parts of atlatls spear-throwing devices that function as lever systems to increase the speed and distance of a dart. These tools allowed hunters to strike targets dozens of meters away. Some wooden pieces still retained visible leather bindings, highlighting skilled craftsmanship. The team also identified curved wooden throwing sticks similar to non-returning boomerangs. Unlike the recreational versions known today, these were designed to travel straight and deliver forceful impact, likely used to hunt small game. Radiocarbon analysis dates the hunting equipment to around 4,500 B.C., though evidence suggests the shelter itself may have been used thousands of years earlier. Because organic materials like wood and leather rarely endure for such long periods, the discovery offers rare insight into early North American hunting technology. Far from being rudimentary, these tools reflect carefully engineered systems adapted to the local environment.
