It was run by an external diversity consultant brought in by the education authorities. David Maynier was the Western Cape MEC for Education at the time. The session was intended to address issues of racism, discrimination, and school climate - Whatever the fuck school climate is... Kids reported to their parents that the session became highly confrontational and emotionally intense. Some learners said they felt targeted or blamed based on race, and that the tone of the session caused distress. Learners were not allowed to leave freely, and no teachers were reportedly present. The school and Western Cape Education Department ended the intervention. While Maynier did not personally run or pre-approve every school intervention in real time, he was politically responsible at the time. It was also roughly around that time when the Department of Basic Education’s proposed unisex policies raged on, and Pinelands North Primary School forged ahead with its gender-neutral toilets. To stay real, the @Our_DA on numerous occasions did denounce DBE’s proposal for Gender Neutral Bathrooms. They publicly stated: "It is the DA’s firm view that gender-neutral bathrooms in schools would be a seriously regressive step, and violate the rights of thousands of learners who prefer separate toilet facilities for males and females. In a country where rape and sexual assault is rife, girls in particular need the protection of single-sex facilities. Don’t bring a knife to school. Don’t bring a knife to a track meet. And let’s say Austin Metcalf was a bully, even though there was no evidence that Austin ever beat that boy up. That still does not give anyone the right to pull out a knife and stab another kid. Kids argue. Kids fight. Kids get into it at school and at events. Most of us have seen fights, been in fights, or dealt with bullies growing up. But a school fight should never end with someone being stabbed to death. So miss me with the self-defense crap. Austin lost his life, and his family can never get him back.
