Proud to have been in the top 10 Sora creators by video likes for a hot minute. Super fun platform. The promise of "unlimited production budget in the hands of every creative human brain" will still come to pass and be beautiful. Post-mortem is combo of: - Tech was a bit early. Takes many many gens to get to real quality output which meant most content was sloppy / garbage. - Platform / algo never rewarded true creativity effectively enough. The feed was always a snooze fest. - You need critical mass of great content creators to make a short form platform work because the end user needs to be able to swipe 100 times a session and build the dopamine loop. Swiping on Sora was never a good consumption experience.

We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work. – The Sora Team

You all have no idea the kind of reasoning happening in the Sora video model, to see this going away is truly stunning and incredibly saddening and I say this as someone who built an entire product around Sora with hundreds of hours of test content generated.

@gavinpurcell Do you think it returns or is used (a video model) in a more focused or changed product in like 4-6 months? Not returns as sora but the strategy and use case changes?

to everyone crapping on sora and dancing on its grave: this is less about there not being a market for the product vs there not being a biz model that makes sense for *this* product when your competitor is winning the race to AGI & profitability without a video model, you pivot

Everyone on X is acting like Sora shutting down is the end of AI filmmaking and I need somebody to explain the logic to me because I am not seeing it. OpenAI is going public. That is the entire story. When you are preparing for an IPO you go through every product and ask whether it makes you look like a serious company or whether it makes you look like you are running a deepfake factory for Disney fan edits. Sora was the latter. It had a social feed, a remix button, copyright lawsuits stacking up, and the most viral content coming off the platform was fake videos of Ricky Berwick doing weird things. That is not a product you bring to investors. That is a liability you quietly walk out to the parking lot and leave there. The research team did not get fired. They got moved to world simulation for robotics. Which sounds a lot less fun but probably has better margins than letting people make AI videos of Mickey Mouse, and as Nvidia has shown it actually has real world use in Disney Theme Parks. The same fundamental research that taught a model how physical objects move through space is now being used for something with actual enterprise contracts behind it. And while everyone is holding a funeral for Sora, Kling is still running. Runway just raised more money. Freepik has video generation. I never once opened Sora when I was actually trying to produce something. Nobody serious did. It was a social app with a text box. It was TikTok with extra steps and a Disney licensing deal that apparently also fell apart, which, yeah, that tracks. I genuinely feel bad for the people who think this is their win. OpenAI cleaned up their balance sheet before going public. That is a thing that happens every day in every industry, and it means absolutely nothing about the trajectory of the technology. The tools are still getting cheaper. The models are still getting better. Nothing changed except that one company stopped letting people make fake videos of cartoon characters for free. Congrats on your victory I guess.
