Ever wonder how wildfires get their names? In Florida and many other states, fires are often named after the road or nearby landmark where they start. We’re standing on Cow Creek Road. That’s exactly how the Cow Creek Fire got its name. It’s a simple system, but when you’re on the front line, the name isn’t just a label, it’s a real place with real people nearby. We found the actual road where this fire likely began. More from the fire line tonight on The Weather Channel. @weatherchannel #Florida #Wildfire #CowCreekFire

We’re on the ground in Illinois after a tornado and massive hail tore through Kankakee County and surrounding areas, displacing families from their homes. “There are 75 homes completely gone and about 200 horribly damaged… People are shell shocked, it's just daunting,” said resident John Frogge. We’re providing cash aid, debris cleanup, and recovery resources.

Damaging wind, hail & tornadoes are forecast for parts of the southern and central U.S. this week. Be prepared in case of a tornado warning: - Go to a small interior room like a closet, basement, or storm cellar - Stay away from windows, large open rooms, doors, or outside walls

These are the #tornado shelters known in the areas with the threats late this week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday). It's not a bad idea to know where they are in advance in case you need them - say if you live in a mobile home or are outdoors. Maps are at findyourtornadoshelter.com.

More than a year after the LA wildfires, recovery is still happening in California. In spaces like this (see pics from our Healing Through Art program), kids are painting, getting creative, and just being kids 💜 Through our partnership with 24LA, we’re supporting community-led spaces with programs such as this one, when the kids were making art and vision boards for the new year. Recovery is still ongoing, and these spaces aren’t just about distribution, they’re about connection, emotional processing, and rebuilding normalcy.

Another update on the severe winter weather: Tragically, a death has been reported in Leflore County. This brings the total to four statewide. Please keep the family in your prayers. Counties continue to conduct damage assessments. @MSEMA has received reports of 92 homes, 3 businesses, and 7 farms damaged statewide. Those numbers are expected to rise as damage assessments continue over the coming days.  Power restoration efforts continue with approximately 143,700 outages reported statewide. @MississippiDOT continues to clear roads. MEMA continues to fill requests from 37 different counties for generators, tarps, MREs, bottled water, cots, blankets, and fuel. @fema is delivering 11 truckloads of supplies to Mississippi and also deploying a 90-person chainsaw team to North Mississippi. The American Red Cross is providing shelter support. Pinelake Church and Convoy of Hope are assisting with supplies in warming shelters. Lowe’s filled a request for shovels and brooms. The Mississippi Trucking Association assisted in finding a company with box trucks to assist with moving supplies. For private businesses that would like to help, please contact MEMA’s Business Emergency Operations Center (MSBEOC). A link to register can be found here: msema.org/get-assistance… For citizens who want to help, the @MSDeptofAg is collecting bottled water, nonperishable food items, can openers, baby diapers and formula, propane cook stoves and propane bottles, and basic essential paper products to be delivered to North Mississippi. Donations can be dropped off at the Old Armory at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds this week, January 27-30, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. MEMA is coordinating with MDAC to ensure the assistance reaches those in need. Please stay home, stay off the roads, and stay warm. Mississippians who need to warm up may seek shelter at a county or city-run warming center in their area. A list of those centers can be found here: msema.org/get-assistance… Travel remains dangerous in many areas. As of 8:30 a.m., ice is still reported on roads and bridges in 37 counties. Please stay off of the roads if possible and only travel in areas affected by winter weather if absolutely necessary. For more information on road conditions, visit:  mdottraffic.com/default.aspx?s… Tomorrow, I will be traveling to areas of the state that have been impacted by the severe winter weather. Also, tomorrow at 4pm, I will be holding a press conference at MEMA to provide another update. Please join us on my Facebook page: facebook.com/tatereeves/ Mississippi is the most charitable state in America – that fact is on full display as our state responds to and recovers from the severe winter weather. Thank you for continuing to help your neighbors. I am proud to be a Mississippian!

Cold weather across parts of the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic means frozen pipes are a real risk. A few quick steps can help reduce damage: • Shut off the main water supply if possible • Drain faucets and exterior hoses • Let faucets drip if water remains on • Open cabinets under sinks • Fill bathtubs or containers as backup water • Set thermostats to at least 55°F and open interior doors • Locate and test your main water shutoff A little preparation now can help prevent costly damage later.

5 years ago, I was living in Fort Worth when the entire state was paralyzed by the apocalyptic winter storm that left hundreds dead. My wife and I had to live in a hotel for weeks. Here are 6 lessons I learned that people should keep in mind ahead of this weekend's storm 🧵

Now at 19 hours with no energy. Temperature expected to drop near or below zero degrees overnight. Immensely grateful to have a fireplace tonight and worried about those who don’t

HISTORIC ICE STORM COMING - A destructive and potentially catastrophic ice storm is forecast to impact the south this weekend. Widespread ice will cripple travel, cause major power outages, and down trees. This is a rare high-impact event — potentially the worst in decades since the Great Ice Storm of February 1994. Computer models are calling for widespread ice accumulations of 1-2+” — for context — a half an inch is considered catastrophic. Residents from Dallas, Shreveport, Atlanta, and Charlotte need to prepare like a hurricane is coming. Buy non-perishable food, water, gas, and charge devices. Protect pipes, plants, pets, and people. It also wouldn’t hurt to trim vulnerable tree limbs close to valuable property. I would have warm clothes in case the power goes out. You can forget about any travel north this weekend. An ice storm of this magnitude will cripple the I-20 corridor along with any flights into this area for days. Ice impacts could even be possible as far south as I-10 in Texas and western Louisiana — but the swath of greatest impacts will likely stay north. Either way, this is trending towards becoming a historic storm, and those in the path should heed warnings from local meteorologists and emergency officials. Stay tuned.
