The blue button / red button debate is kind of interesting. Scenario one: you press the blue button and blue wins. Everybody wins. You are a hero. You risked all and saved many. Scenario two: You press the blue button and red wins. Your story ends. Scenario three: You press the red button and blue wins. You live. Scenario four: You press the red button and red wins. You live. Scenario five: You press the red button and red wins by 1 vote. Your vote could have saved four billion lives. The only case where anybody has regrets is maybe scenario five. And what's the chance of that?

This post is an excellent litmus test for understanding of just war theory. Despite the fact that I can see how effective this would be, I must oppose it because the damage it would do to my enemy (who bashes in my mailbox) would far outweigh the good of saving my mailbox. Its disproportionality is opposed by our duty in charity (and even justice) to watch out even for the good of our enemies. (Yes, by the way, I have had my mailbox bashed in by random vandals.)

When you get married, if it’s a marriage that means more to both of you than a legal merger, there’s no “his” and “mine” anymore. I would tell my sons not to marry any woman to who wasn’t eager to take his name. NOT because I care in theory whether they take his or hers. But because in practice it’s a sign that she has a view of marriage that’s something other than the kind of oneness on a single team that you should have with a spouse.

I truly hate this argument, which assumes men simply have names but women’s are all somehow men’s. By this logic, it’s not your dad’s name either - it’s his dad’s. And not his either - his dad’s. Your name is actually your name. And yes of course women should have the legal right to change their names in marriage but let’s please not lie to ourselves that marital name-changing isn’t incredibly sexist and a very literal manifestation of patriarchal power. So is patrilineal naming for children, btw. One answer to “but it’s my dad’s name” might be to stop giving children dad’s name for a while.

@megievalist What was average daily meat consumption per capita like for a “model” peasant in 13th century England? Probably extremely low! If protein and lipid availability was not a massive constraint for these populations we wouldn’t, for example, see short statures.
