A friend who lives in St Clement, Jersey, finally able to get outside and assess the damage in his estate. Scale of damage is shocking. #StormCiaran

@pvbsc1 It was reminder of the 5 April deadline extension for anyone who has previously paid national insurance in the UK and the opportunity for them to pay for any missing years from 2006 onwards.

@CarlWalker7 I heard the tail end of you on the radio talking about pensions about buying back the years if moving to island from uk. Is my understanding correct?

When does a child become an adult in Jersey? There is a complete lack of consistency as some of our Island’s attractions start charging adult prices from 12 years old! Here’s a quick rundown of from what age you can expect to pay full price…

Everything is set for tonight’s ⁦@JEPnews#PrideofJerseyAwards in Trinity, which I’m honoured to be co-hosting with Jersey-born soprano Georgi Mottram. Just finished rehearsals and a script run-through and it’s going to be an emotional one!

@TheOnlyGuru Definitely email or call Customs on this. If no luck, drop me a line and we can investigate further.

@CarlWalker7 It’s the third time this month. I don’t do mathematics, cause as you know, I’m moderately good-looking in the right light, but I’ve paid six times in total on 3 deliveries.

Evening @CarlWalker7 Could you enlighten me, please? If I’ve already paid 5% VAT on goods, to the supplier, why am I also paying GST on top please?

@TheOnlyGuru Ahh. Some places - including some Amazon sellers - charge GST but call VAT as ghetto systems haven’t been updated. However, you certainly shouldn’t have then had the item stopped and taxed again at Customs. A call to them will sort it, I’m sure.

@CarlWalker7 No, I’ve paid 5% VAT to a company that doesn’t appear to be on the pulldown list and I’ve been paid GST. It shows clearly on their invoice that VAT is at 5% . So in essence, I’ve paid twice.

@DominicCJones More education across the board is definitely needed, and something we have fed back to Scrutiny - especially for those who have not embraced modern technology, do not have access to it or who have been left behind by the acceleration towards it as a result of Covid.

@CarlWalker7 Which is why I’ve spoken to Digital Jersey to support businesses who have this issue. Fact: Cashless is cheaper than banking cash - quicker, easier and reduces banking, security and staff costs. But some smaller businesses are not accessing the cheaper services.

@DominicCJones There are small business I have spoken to who have told me the cost of accepting card payments is the equivalent of paying a staff member’s Saturday wage. I think there are strong arguments for both sides - and I’m not sure we are ready as a society to go cashless just yet.

@CarlWalker7 Small businesses ( including some in Jersey) argue cash cheaper for them and ask people to pay in cash. Others argue that cashless is conspiracy of financial institutions to earn commissions on all transactions. IT issues caused tills to crash so they can’t scan/take cash either!

@DominicCJones Not aware of claims that cash makes things cheaper. Pros and cons of both. Cash helps those who struggle to budget, those who for various reasons cannot open a bank account, and allows those who have not - or are afraid to - embrace modern technology to continue to spend.

@CarlWalker7 Should we go back to candles, gas lighting or analogue telephones too because we get powercuts ? Cash costs money and makes goods and services more expensive. There may be other reasons why people want to keep cash but not to make goods and services cheaper.

@tim_pryor @JerseyFA Congratulations Tim - great news. Pleased to hear you’re keen to tackle the issue of access to 3G pitches for winter training, which really hits junior teams, who often find themselves at the bottom of the priority list and the cost unaffordable. Happy to support this where I can

@TheOnlyGuru Yes. We are also finding some places list it as VAT but in fact it’s 5% GST (Amazon) so it’s all very confusing for the consumer - and unfair when it’s actually 20% VAT. We’re on the case though!

Simply because a situation is ‘the way it’s always been’ doesn’t mean we should accept it and not challenge it from time to time. Today @JerseyConsumer published a report, which aimed to discover why mortgage rates in Jersey are higher than those from the same lenders in the UK

@Mammoth799 @JerseyConsumer @StatesAssembly The gas outage issue is with lawyers and progressing well, and our mortgage report should be published later this month. These campaigns make up a fraction of what we do. Happy to invite you to our office so you can see how @JerseyConsumer takes-on individuals’ cases every day

@CarlWalker7 @JerseyConsumer @StatesAssembly You never get anything done though. Where are we with Gas compo? Mortgage Rates? Business takes no notice of you. Just an expensive empty can that makes a lot of noise. Everybody shops around, its basic home economics ffs.
