I was never able to afford shoes like these when I was a kid
I grew up in a low-income family, and the ‘08 Financial Crisis made my family’s situation much worse
I couldn’t even spend $12 to go to the movies with my friends
I didn’t realize that despite my circumstances, I was an extremely lucky 9 year old.
I had a roof. I had clothes. I had access to food and water. Most importantly, I had loving parents that always put me first. I didn’t know this yet, but that was worth more than any amount of money.
But it’s hard to realize these things when you are still maturing and not even a teenager yet
All I could think about was how I couldn’t even watch a movie at the theaters with my friends or get Nikes or eat at a restaurant other than Burger King
I still remember my mom giving me a $10 bill on my 11th birthday with tears in her eyes because she was sorry she couldn’t give more
When I reflect on this moment of my life, I realize how unbelievably fortunate I still was compared to the rest of the world
I thought I was “poor,” but even being low-income in the US can be a blessing when you compare yourselves to kids in other parts of the world
But it motivated me to work as hard as possible to get myself out of the financial situation I was in
I started working at the age of 14, and I have earned everything to my name
Every job I have gotten, every dollar I have earned, every asset I’ve invested in, and every single thing I have done with my life has been a result of my own work
No loans, no nepotism, no handouts, no shortcuts.
As a result of my financial struggles, I never buy nice things for myself. But one day I decided it was time to gift myself something I’d always wanted as a kid.
So these Nikes you see here may look like regular Nikes to you
But to me they represent a struggle that made me who I am today and a testament to hard work and grit
I am proud for making it this far, but I’ve got a long way to go.
