Could someone explain the cultural difference here please.
Every time I speak with an American team, they fully understand the importance of the founder being public and are willing to do it.
However, anytime I speak with a team from Korea, China, or Singapore, and I bring up the concept of founder led marketing, they're like "Oh no no no no, we're not planning on doing that" as if its some taboo or offence to be a public figure.
Would love to hear from anyone familiar what are the underlying cultural beliefs are that create such distinct reactions.

@leonabboud Yes, it's because those cultures value humility and disregarding the self at the altar of the collective. @tszzl knows more about it than I do.

@leonabboud I think a lot of it comes down to cultural differences around individualism vs collectivism. In the US, founder visibility is seen as trust-building, while in many East Asian cultures more emphasis is on the team over the individuals

The reason why most people who made a lot of money during memecoin mania lost it can be explained by The Danger Of The Unearned Paradox.
Having a lethal weapon without the capability to wield it creates a dangerous imbalance.
Wielding a lethal weapon requires discipline, knowledge, and reflexes to manage it.
When the knowledge doesn’t exist, the weapon becomes a liability rather than an advantage.
Now replace the weapon with money.
Most of the memecoin trenchers who made it big and lost it all were better off never having made that money.
Because now, they’re forever handicapped by the memory of having had access to a lethal weapon they were never able to wield.

Well most people already answered but just to add: you can notice how Asian users often post pictures themselves in their own personal socials with their faces blurred.
The harassment can be wild. Evangelion’s director Hideki Anno received lots of death treats and got his studio vandalized by haters
who didn’t like the series ending, for example.

@leonabboud So I’m from a semi Asian culture and we don’t do public showing off its considered uncultured especially the way Americans do it
Being low profile and humble is the way to go for Asian markets, especially places like Caucasia Central Asia and even some eastern Asian places

From what I understand about Asian culture, many Asian teams grew up in cultures where maintaining a low profile, avoiding public mistakes, and protecting the group/company's reputation is more important than individual visibility
In the US, founders are often seen as the brand
In many Asian cultures, being too public can be interpreted as risky or arrogant

@leonabboud Because face = reputation. Markets like Korea, Japan or SG do not forget or forgive.
Once the face is lost it is lost.
So founders prefer to keep distanse for as long as possible. And if it is crypto, it is also a idustry stigma too.

The simplest way to differentiate your product is to have a worldview that is different than your peers in the marketplace.
A couple years ago, I noticed that there was a big flaw in marketing where brands outsourced their distribution to influencers.
What happened to them is that they never built an owned audience, and were stuck renting it from others.
The moment the cycle of paid marketing stopped, so did the distribution.
The consensus back then was that this was the only way to market. But I saw it as deeply flawed, and instead introduced the concept of Founder Funnel, where attention gets retained not rented.
This contrarian belief was the catalyst that allowed me to stand out in a competitive industry.
Whatever you're trying to build, be it AI agent infra, neobanks, fintechs, DEXs, SaaS tools... the most important element you need in your brand positioning is your contrarian angle.
