Antimatter has officially left the laboratory!
CERN researchers prove it can be safely moved by road to specialized facilities worldwide.
On March 24, 2026, scientists at CERN’s BASE experiment reached a groundbreaking milestone by successfully transporting 92 antiprotons via road. Using a specialized cryogenic Penning trap, the team moved the antimatter counterparts to protons by truck, proving that these highly volatile particles can survive outside a controlled laboratory environment. To prevent the immediate annihilation that occurs when antimatter touches ordinary matter, the researchers utilized a portable, superconducting magnetic container that maintained a vacuum at a staggering -269°C. This achievement demonstrates that the most delicate substances in the universe can be safely relocated without catastrophic failure.
This successful transport marks the dawn of a new era for fundamental physics, allowing antimatter to be studied at specialized laboratories away from the magnetic noise of CERN’s main accelerators. By moving these particles to quieter environments, researchers can perform high-precision measurements that were previously impossible. These studies are critical to solving the mystery of matter-antimatter asymmetry—the fundamental question of why our universe exists at all. As antimatter begins its journey to other European laboratories, scientists are one step closer to unlocking the deep-seated secrets of the early universe.
