I took on a big topic, and there are 1,000 things I could say about it, so I'll settle for this: I hope this work facilitates more harmonized and synergistic efforts to manage, conserve, and understand these systems.

Can anyone ID this creepy fella? Flushed out of some silt while retrieving an acoustic receiver from a southern Ontario river yesterday. Length was 3–4 inches.

@EcoInvasions That's definitely our culprit! I had no idea cranefly larva could be that big. I've seen some big cranefly adults, but probably never this species...

I also worry about the crowding that will ensue in 'spillover' areas, where people will flock because their local provincial and/or municipal parks are closed. Authoritative approaches, lacking proper incentivization and coherence, may receive minimal compliance.

Personally, I wonder if it's reasonable/realistic to demand that people comply fully with restrictions that target safe activities such as outdoor recreation.

Less than a year ago, we surveyed anglers about recreational fishing during the pandemic. Unfortunately, current pandemic conditions look very similar to what they were at this time last year. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Among other things, recreational anglers expressed their desire for clear communication and a consistent, informed response to subsequent pandemic waves. Anglers also testified to the importance of outdoor time and pandemic-safe recreation for their mental and physical health.
