Is Rep. Carla Cunningham misguided in her decision to override Governor Josh Stein’s veto of HB 318? I believe so. She stated she wouldn’t “line up behind another group” to raise awareness about their plight. But no one asked her to protest, rally, or march. What we do expect is for our elected officials to understand the long-term impact of the laws they support—especially when those laws don’t just harm immigrant communities, but potentially harm their own. I agree that immigrants should seek legal citizenship in this country. Yet, HB 318 mandates local law enforcement cooperation with ICE—opening the door to increase racial profiling, and increased mistrust of those expected to serve and protect. That’s not safety. Michelle Alexander once wrote in The New Jim Crow that “just decades ago, politicians promised more prison walls… and now, they promise border walls.” The system hasn’t changed—just the targets. Mass incarceration of Black people and mass deportation of immigrants are two sides of the same coin. Both rely on profiling, and criminalizing marginalized communities. Both break families. Both fuel the same machinery of exclusion and dehumanization. We deserve leaders who play chess, not checkers—leaders who can connect the dots and understand that injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere. Rep. Cunningham’s vote signals a dangerous disconnect. And we see it.

Shaboozey dedicates his #GRAMMYs award to immigrants during his acceptance speech: “Immigrants built this country, literally. Actually. So this is for them. For all children of immigrants, and for those who came to this country in search of a better opportunity, to be part of a nation that promised freedom for all and equal opportunity for everyone.”
