An extreme commitment to the truth makes relationships acutely dysfunctional but systems chronically functional (think Elon Musk). An extreme commitment to kindness makes relationships acutely functional but systems chronically dysfunctional (think Sweden, UK)

Lately I've been obsessed with learning about how authors create characters and stories. Seriously, how does one develop a character with so much depth, mystery, vividness, complexity? Out of thin air! I've been reading about certain authors or watching their interviews, and the process is really mindblowing to me. For some authors, the characters simply appear and it's their job to pay attention and record their story, voice, behaviors. One author said she sits in front of a mirror while writing so she can assume the postures and expressions of her characters to get a glimpse into their personality and motivations. I often hear authors say they were "surprised" by the actions of their characters––as though they're not the ones determining them! And still, there are other authors who are very intentional about their characters and story, dictating every move and detail like a god. It's truly a miracle that we can imagine and bring to life so many characters and stories using just words. It never ceases to amaze me
