AI is becoming an energy story. In @washingtonpost, @MarkPMills explains how data center demand is outpacing the grid—and why private power is emerging fast. This reality is highlighted in his recent NCEA research. We’re trying to build the most energy-intensive technology in history…on a grid that’s been optimized for something else. And when physics and economics reassert themselves, the costs show up fast. Read the op-ed: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2026/… Explore the full NCEA research: energyanalytics.org/the-rise-of-ai…

At last year's Energy Future Forum, FERC Chairman Mark Christie reminded the room of something that often gets lost in the policy debate: every decision made in Washington shows up on someone's energy bill. His remarks were a highlight of the day. The 2026 forum promises more of the same — frank, consequential conversations from the people who shape America's energy landscape. Washington, D.C. or online this May 1. Don't miss it. 🔗 Register: realclearenergy.org/forum/2026 Presented by @_RCEnergy in partnership with @USChamber of Commerce and National Center for Energy Analytics.

We talk about energy security constantly. But until now, we haven’t measured it in a way that reflects reality. In a new op-ed in @RealClearEnergy, NCEA Senior Fellow Iddo Wernick and Visiting Fellow Stephen Eule introduce a fundamentally different approach: the U.S. Energy Security Index (ESI). Energy security doesn’t fail gradually—it fails suddenly. Through price shocks. Supply disruptions. Geopolitical conflict. The ESI is designed to track those risks before they surface—offering a clearer view of whether the United States is becoming more resilient… or more exposed. At a moment defined by global instability, constrained supply chains, and rising demand, understanding direction is everything. This is not just another metric. It’s a new way to see the system. 📰 Read the op-ed: realclearenergy.org/articles/2026/… 📊 Explore the research: energyanalytics.org/esi/

Happening now: measuring what matters in energy security. Join the conversation at Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Studies as Executive Director @MarkPMillsdiscusses the newly launched NCEA U.S. Energy Security Index (ESI) and what it reveals about America’s energy resilience. This is about more than data—it’s about understanding whether the U.S. is becoming more secure or more exposed in an increasingly volatile global system. Energy security and shipbuilding are back at the center of the conversation. In the latest Manufacturing Talks, NCEA Visiting Fellow @JimVinoski and Senior Fellow Allen Brooks discuss how events in Iran are highlighting both U.S. vulnerabilities and strategic priorities for energy and industrial policy.

Energy policy is ultimately about trade-offs. In a new segment with @RCPolitics , NCEA Executive Director @MarkPMills discusses how rising geopolitical tensions with Iran are once again exposing the realities of global energy systems. There are no “free” energy choices. Every policy decision involves balancing reliability, affordability, and security—often under conditions shaped by forces well beyond domestic control. Moments like this make those trade-offs visible. They also underscore why energy realism matters. ▶️ Watch the full segment: realclearpolitics.com/video/2026/03/…

The Global Oil market just received a 400-million-barrel shock absorber. The largest coordinated release of reserves in the agency's history raises an important question: Can short-term releases make up for long-term demand realities? NCEA Visiting Fellow @NeilAtkinson58 and Senior Advisor at KAPSARC @Adam_Sieminski examine why realistic energy forecasting matters as the oil markets increasingly feel the effects of geopolitical tensions and oil demand is projected to rise through 2050. Energy security often shows up first in prices. Tensions with Iran and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz—a route for ~20% of global oil trade—are a reminder how quickly markets react to supply risk. That’s why NCEA's Fellows Iddo Wernick and Stephen Eule developed the U.S. Energy Security Index (ESI) — a framework designed to track whether America’s energy system is becoming more resilient or more vulnerable to global shocks. NCEA’s new U.S. Energy Security Index introduces the first integrated measure of the state and direction of geopolitical risk in the U.S. energy system—tracking 18 indicators across oil, gas, minerals, uranium, and infrastructure vulnerabilities. In a complex system, the key question isn’t whether uncertainty exists. It’s whether the trend is improving. Read the report: energyanalytics.org/esi/
