@2C_ornot2C @Molson_Hart While the directional flow of capital and technology transfer has changed, the role of that diaspora has not. e.g. ethnic Chinese diaspora (prominent in the business community) in SEA playing a key role in facilitating outbound Chinese FDI and related supply chain development.

There was a feedback loop decades later as the disapora played a critical role in reinvesting capital, skills and trade relationships accumulated overseas back into China when it finally opened up in the 80s. Ethnic Chinese diaspora account for a disproportionate share of FDI stock into China even to this day.

The Bamboo network does not get as much attention as it deserves but it's importance was noted way back in the 90s by couple of astute American observers. Interestingly, one of the authors (Weidenbaum) was the first chairman of President Reagan’s Council of Economic Advisors.
