We are aware of what is happening in the paper oil market, including the firms hired to influence oil futures. We also see the broader jawboning campaign. But let’s see if they can turn that into "actual fuel" at the pump —or maybe even print gas molecules!

And it appears that in the immediate aftermath of that event, rather than be chastened by it, the Iranians began a dialogue with the Chinese that they wanted to dramatically increase their missile capacity to survive any similar effort in the future such as the 12 Day War. Greater offensive missile capacity would allow them to prevent another strike on the nuke facilities because a preemptive effort against their missiles would not do the job again. Once in place, such a capacity would have allowed them to retrieve the 400+ kgs of 60% enriched uranium buried in the rubble, and continue on with the effort to further enrich it to weapons grade at 90%. I suspect -- though haven't seen confirmed -- that the Iranians were already seeking to purchase new centrifuges to replace those lost. The non-stop flow of money for oil sold to China was all the cash flow they needed to fund the effort. Tehran didn't have a functional drinking water system, but the Mullahs were going to spend billions building more missiles and enriching more uranium. The Mullahs were simply unwilling to give up their quest to have nukes no matter how severe the consequences visited upon them.

President Trump proposes declaring victory and retreating. That's better than seizing islands, but it has to be accompanied by negotiations with Iran and some new deal to open up the Strait of Hormuz. Otherwise, Trump will simply have stirred a hornet's nest, enriched Russia, hurt Europe and Asia -- and then moved on.
