Today is my last day at WaPo after ~9 years
A very self-indulgent post, I know, but some highlights of my time:
— Meeting & giving voice to those at the bottom: Laid off steelworkers in Kentucky & coal miners in West Virginia; residents in decrepit public housing in NYC; hurricane survivors in Puerto Rico; Maine families crippled by the eldercare crisis; victims of US sanctions in rural Guatemala
— Challenging those at the top: Wall Street and Fortune 500 execs; Congressional leaders, White House officials & U.S. treasury secretaries in both parties
— Getting an appendectomy in eastern Ukraine
— Telling people I had no authority to send stimulus checks, given that I'm a reporter
— Spending my travel budget on Taco Bell dinners
So grateful for all the editors, sources, reporters & above all readers with me all these years

Bezos is still under the delusion that quantity of content is more important than quality.
This was the guiding philosophy for Vice, BuzzFeed, Mic, HuffPo, Gawker and so many other 2010s digital publications — flood the internet with content, don’t worry about building long-term brand value, just get as many pageviews as possible and sell display ads against them. All of these publications are now shells of their former selves.
This model is even harder now with Google Zero approaching. Dumb.

Over and over, we've seen U.S. troops risk or lose their lives in wars that have significant tactical success but murky longterm outcomes, at best.
Any journalist not asking repeatedly about what comes next and how we get there isn't doing their job. The stakes are too high.

Today’s media cheer against the US, overstate enemy abilities, understate ours and paint a picture that the US is losing, while we’re winning. It’s more true today as they cheer against Trump in Iran. Within 10 days weeks of this 2001 NYT doozy saying our military efforts in Afghanistan were bogged down, the key city of Mazar e Sharif fell to the US and our ally the Northern Alliance, and Kabul fell days later. This story was written a mere three weeks after our counter-offensive against Al Qaeda began. But that didn’t stop the NYT from saying we were already in a quagmire. The media are doing the same thing today in Iran. From a military point of view, Operation Epic Fury has been a huge success. We don’t know yet about who will run Iran, but the press will always see America’s cup as 1/10th empty. If today’s press covered WW II, they would have written mostly about civilian casualties, friendly fire, and failed missions, downplaying the overwhelming allied victories against the Nazis.

His big idea remains the (only?) one he has had for years: Produce more stories. But now he wants to do that with half the staff. A.) Good luck. B.) This is an outdated traffic play. This is not how you grow paying audience and get to profitability. We learned this as an industry already. Bezos has not.

Bezos said the same things when he came to the newsroom three years ago and met with reporters. That time it was to solve a leadership crisis between the publisher and the editor. He promised to be more engaged. (Firing half the newsroom is not what most of us had in mind.)

I don't know who needs to hear this (well, actually I do) but the Defense Dept spending money on shellfish, ice cream, and steak for servicemembers at war, many of whom have been at sea for a long time already, is not a scandal. This is just basic taking care of the troops.
