Covering the Johnny Somali trial from first hearing to sentencing has been an educational and wild experience, big thanks to all the members of the Somali Conviction Team who came through to get jail time to happen. While I’m happy we proved Johnny Somali wrong when he said “I promise you I won’t get one day in jail” - we all feel that 6 months with labor, 20 days additional detention, is too light. At least 2 years, if not the prosecutors recommendation of 3 would be more appropriate. Let’s hope the prosecutor appeals

The voters of San Diego County set term limits for the Board of Supervisors. Two terms. Eight years. The people decided. Now the Board Chair wants to change that. She’s pushing a charter amendment to extend Supervisor term limits to three terms. Twelve years. And she wants to put it on the November ballot wrapped in language about “transparency” and “accountability” so it sounds like good government reform. Let me translate. The Board majority is voting to give themselves more time in office. That’s it. Everything else in this proposal, the independent budget analyst, the ethics commission, the program auditor, is window dressing designed to make you feel good about letting them stay in power longer. The voters spoke on term limits. The Board majority doesn’t like the answer. So they’re trying to change the question.
