Hawks Arrest Police Sergeant In R80,000 Corruption Sting At Lebombo Border Post A 42 year old police sergeant stationed at the Lebombo Port of Entry has been arrested by the Hawks following a covert anti corruption operation linked to alleged criminal activities at the South Africa and Mozambique border. According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the arrest took place on 8 June 2026 after intelligence suggested that syndicates involved in vehicle theft, hijackings, and insurance fraud were allegedly working with corrupt officials to move stolen and fraudulently obtained vehicles across the border. Investigators allege that certain officials received payments in exchange for allowing vehicles to pass through border controls without proper scrutiny. Following an intelligence driven investigation, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit, assisted by Crime Intelligence, surveillance teams, and tactical units, launched a covert operation targeting the alleged corruption network. During the operation, the sergeant, who was reportedly on duty at the time, allegedly accepted an R80,000 gratification payment from an undercover agent and was immediately arrested. Authorities recovered the R80,000 in operational funds during the arrest and have since opened a corruption case for further investigation. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released and he is expected to appear before the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on 10 June 2026. The Hawks say the investigation forms part of broader efforts to dismantle corruption networks and criminal syndicates operating through border posts. As the matter is before the courts, the accused remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Do you believe stronger measures are needed to combat corruption at South Africa’s border posts⁉️🫪 #Hawks #Lebombo #SAPS #Corruption #BorderSecurity #SouthAfricaNews

I can confirm that I have received the documents containing detailed information on foreign nationals employed at South Africa's public universities. According to the records, by 2025 there were more than 7,000 foreign academics employed across public universities, with Zimbabwean nationals accounting for 27% and Nigerians 14% of the total. The University of Johannesburg employed the highest number, with more than 1,400 foreign academics. I am currently reviewing the extensive documentation and will publish a detailed article with a full breakdown soon. Special thanks to Chairperson Hon. Letsie, MP, for authorizing the Secretary of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education to share the documents, making this important information accessible for public scrutiny and reporting.
