@edmontonjournal 700,000 plus Albertans signed petitions on independence. But ….. do go on about how Alberta taxpayers shouldn’t support an appeal. 🤡

If a separatist group wants to fight this in court, they can pay for their own appeal. It is not the responsibility of Alberta taxpayers to subsidize a political project the government claims it does not even support. edmontonjournal.com/opinion/letter…

“More power in the hands of ordinary Albertans. That’s the point of the citizens initiative law that we just introduced… A citizen initiative law allows citizens to force a referendum vote on an important issue if it’s being ignored by your elected representatives, by parties…. They can force a referendum vote on an amendment to the Canadian constitution. Putting Albertans ultimately in the democratic drivers seat… This is something I committed to… Part of that fair deal means giving Albertans the ultimate say on big issues like this. Another promise made, another promise kept.” @jkenney and @shandro, does this little refresher video answer your nonsense questions today about why people are using the very laws your government introduced to “force a referendum vote on an important issue if it’s being ignored by your elected representatives, by parties”? How about respecting the promise you made to put Albertans in the democratic driver’s seat, and maybe taking a backseat yourselves?
Jason Kenney 🇨🇦🇺🇦🇮🇱@jkenney

We have introduced the Citizen Initiative Act to put Albertans in the driver's seat of our democracy. Following the last federal election, I committed to doing everything within our power to fight for a fair deal for Alberta, and to give Albertans a bigger say over major issues.

Danielle Smith and David Parker have a long-standing, deeply connected relationship. She needs him to stay in power just as much as he needs her to keep his separatist agenda alive.

Last night I saw what looked like a small explosion in the distance, but it was just a tractor ripping through dry land. Today, I can barely see 100 feet outside my window because the sky is dark with blowing soil. That immediately made me think about the Dirty Thirties. Y’all have heard of the Dirty Thirties, right? The era when agriculture collapsed, people were impoverished, jobs disappeared, and families survived on food stamps. It became known as the “Dust Bowl” because poor land management and over-cultivation literally turned the soil into dust. Honestly, I think we are moving toward a modern version of the same problem, only on a much larger scale. It blows my mind to see nearly every square inch of prairie land under cultivation. Years ago, someone told me that my local grain elevator could load enough grain onto a single train in one day to feed Canada for a year. That’s one elevator, one train, one day. I can see three elevators from my town alone. To me, that raises serious questions about overproduction and the long-term health of our land. I’ve spent the last 7 years researching agriculture and soil health, and I believe many of our current practices are damaging. A lot of it comes down to corporate-driven systems that prioritize short-term yields and profit over long-term stewardship of the land. Most people already know which corporations dominate modern agriculture. We have a responsibility to do better, and that responsibility starts with us. We don’t need to wait for governments or corporations to tell us how to care for the land. We can choose better practices ourselves. Maybe it’s time we stopped obsessing about “feeding the world” and started focusing on feeding our own people first through healthy, regenerative agriculture that restores soil instead of exhausting it. So I have to ask: Are we already living through a modern Dust Bowl? And if not yet, are we headed there? To me, it seems very possible. If you think current agricultural practices are not a problem, I’d encourage you to watch a few documentaries and hear different perspectives before dismissing the idea: • Kiss the Ground • Common Ground • The Biggest Little Farm • Roots So Deep • Feeding Tomorrow • Inhabit There are many others as well. You can find several of them at filmsforaction.org.

this is how I see it too If petitioning govt is subject to indigenous approval, it implies that Alberta is not a democracy because it means the citizenry (and elected govt) is now subservient to non elected chiefs. Furthermore what were they wishing to consult about? Proposing the question does not shift thier rights or treaties in any way, and if successful they are already guaranteed consultation as part of the clarity act Finally There were dozens of extremely public town halls held over the course of months where opponents were allowed to speak They could have attended at any time So how were they denied consultation?

No one said it would be easy. Nothing worth fighting for ever is. Fighting powerful institutions is what I have done my entire life. It is not easy, but it is worth it because you know what is at stake. This is also not a new problem. History has repeated this pattern before. “The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; the second is war. Both bring a temporary prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunists.” — Ernest Hemingway Most do not want to give up an inch of their power or control because many have built their identity, influence, and livelihoods around those systems. Some have convinced the public that they know what is best for everyone else better than citizens know for themselves. Yet all you have to do is look around to see the lie. We are not better when people are divided, angry, fearful, and distracted, turning on each other instead of asking harder questions about the institutions and incentives driving the problems in the first place. And if good people stop standing up, asking questions, and pushing back when something is wrong, those institutions only become more powerful and less accountable. That has been happening for a long time, which is exactly why many systems are so entrenched and disconnected from the people they are supposed to serve. History repeatedly shows that when governments and institutions avoid addressing deeper structural problems, they rely on temporary measures, slogans, fear, distractions, and promises of quick fixes to maintain stability and public support. But eventually reality catches up, and and ordinary people bear the cost. So do not expect a quick fix or some magical solution. Democracy, accountability, and freedom require informed citizens willing to stay engaged, stay principled, ask difficult questions, and do the hard work necessary to protect them. Because in the end, what is more important to fight for than freedom, accountability, and the society we leave behind for future generations?

I spent a large part of my career working on the First Nations consultation policy, specifically on what triggers the duty to consult and the level of consultation required. As a side note I am not in any way a separatist. However the court decision today not only seems premature in assuming the impact on section 35 rights (which trigger the duty) but also has broader implications in terms of when and how First Nations should be consulted on citizen referendums. Regardless of topic. It’s massive overreach by the courts and it won’t stop the separatist movement, it will simply make them more angry and more motivated.
