The pesticide industry’s new pitch: “Sure, we might be spraying your food with chemicals linked to thousands of lawsuits, but have you considered the price of cereal?” Americans are waking up to glyphosate. Congress is rejecting chemical liability shields. We’re electing anti-Big Ag candidates in farm country. So now Big Chemical is running fear ads about grocery prices. What they won’t mention is that while pesticides may lower the cost of some ultra-processed foods (only because of subsidies, and which we shouldn’t be eating anyways), they will raise the cost of cancer bills. But Big Ag doesn’t want to pay those either. Which is why they continue to push pesticide liability shields in every state and on the federal level despite over $16 billion in cancer settlements.

Safe products do not need immunity from liability. Civil liability is a core function of the free market.

Paraquat has been known to cause Parkinson’s for decades. It’s banned in China, but made by a Chinese company. They’re now ceasing global production due to safety concerns. All the while the EPA continued to register it and was unwilling to lift a finger to protect Americans. The EPA is captured. It cannot be the final say in safety. The proposed farm bill takes power from the courts and makes an EPA registration the final say. The EPA itself said registration was not meant as a guarantee of safety. The courts are the final arbiter when harmed in a free market system.

This farmer just blew the whistle on a five-alarm fire for MAHA: Chinese pesticide manufacturer Syngenta just announced that they’re “ceasing all production” of paraquat, an “extremely toxic” herbicide. But in the US, paraquat is “still approved by the EPA.” And House Republicans are advancing a new law to give pesticide makers like Syngenta and Bayer a total immunity shield from being sued for mass poisoning Americans. Regenerative farmer and Iowa gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn warned that this liability shield will lead to the exact same kind of disaster caused by the 1986 liability shield for vaccines: “They’ll have a blank check to produce what they wanna produce and not have to face the repercussions.” “We are captured to an extent that we don’t even realize.” House Republicans are on the brink of the ultimate betrayal of MAHA if this liability shield passes. If they want to be here they need to add value to the community. We’re giving $100m+ in property tax relief to $100b+ companies to create a few dozen long term jobs. It should be the opposite. They pay more and we use those funds to lower property taxes for Iowa residents.

Wanted a quick lunch; stopped at a Taco Bell. All I wanted was two hard shell tacos and a small Pepsi. There are kiosks but no counter workers. I used a kiosk. It was like using a 300 baud dial-up modem with Netscape. Sloooooooow. Too many pages. Too many items. No, I don’t want to join a rewards club. No, I don’t want to add a chalupa. The order process took five minutes. And the kitchen worker forgot one item. I’m sticking with taco trucks. They are faster, fresher, and the food tastes better. Never again, @tacobell
