Minister Parks Tau intervenes to save Tongaat Hulett as import surge threatens 40,000 jobs Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau has stepped in to prevent the liquidation of struggling sugar giant Tongaat Hulett, warning that its collapse would devastate communities across KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga. The embattled company, in business rescue since 2022 following an accounting scandal, faces a provisional liquidation hearing on 27 February. Tau confirmed his department will oppose the application, arguing the company can still be saved. The intervention comes after funding talks between prospective buyer Vision Group and the Industrial Development Corporation collapsed. Tongaat has funds to operate until the crushing season starts in April, but its future remains uncertain. Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen warned that 15,500 cane growers could be unable to deliver their crop if the impasse continues. While Tongaat's troubles began with governance failures, industry players say a surge in cheap imports has pushed the sector to breaking point. Imports reached 163,000 tonnes by December 2025, a 155% increase from the previous season. These subsidised imports have displaced local sugar from retailers, forcing producers to export at a loss. SA Canegrowers warned that the import surge, combined with the sugar tax, is strangling the industry. Since 2018, the sugar tax has cost the sector an estimated 16,000 jobs and R2 billion in revenue. Tongaat operates three mills and is the country's only white sugar refiner. It is the sole milling option for 18,000 growers. If operations cease, 40,000 direct workers face immediate unemployment, while 250,000 jobs supported by the sector are at risk. More than 1 million tonnes of sugarcane worth R845 million are at stake this season. SA Canegrowers warned that rural communities would be "vulnerable to economic and social unrest." Tau has initiated amendments to better regulate the local market. Industry bodies are also calling for a review of the dollar-based reference price for imports. The liquidation application has been temporarily withheld to allow urgent talks to continue. SA Canegrowers emphasised that no party wants the business to simply shut its doors. But with the crushing season approaching, Tau's intervention may be the last chance to prevent what the industry has called a "death knell" for Tongaat Hulett.

Tributes Pour In for Young KZN Pilot Killed in Plane Crash Tributes are pouring in for Leeché Manuel, a 24-year-old pilot student from KwaZulu-Natal, who was killed in a plane crash during a routine training flight in Gauteng earlier this week. Manuel, a recipient of the prestigious KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s Bursary Programme, was in the final stages of his instructor training when the light aircraft went down near Sofasonke on Thursday. His flight instructor also tragically lost their life in the accident. The eThekwini native is being remembered as a dedicated and passionate aviator whose promising career was cut short. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli led the tributes, describing Manuel as a “shining example” of determination and talent. “He demonstrated remarkable hard work and commitment as he neared the completion of his training,” Premier Ntuli said. He extended heartfelt condolences to Manuel’s family, friends, and the broader aviation community, adding that the province would continue to support youth development in Manuel’s honour. Excellentia Airline Academy, where Manuel was training, issued a statement expressing profound devastation at the loss. The academy confirmed it is cooperating fully with the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) and other investigative bodies as they work to determine the cause of the crash. Friends and family have also taken to social media to honour the young pilot’s memory, celebrating his passion for flying and the bright future ahead of him. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the crash, with a comprehensive technical report expected to be released in due course.

Ramaphosa’s nephew Hangwani Maumela loses R326m in Tembisa hospital corruption crackdown The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has seized assets worth R326 million from Hangwani Morgan Maumela, the alleged mastermind of a syndicate that defrauded Tembisa Hospital. Maumela, a nephew by marriage to President Cyril Ramaphosa, had a fleet of luxury cars including four Lamborghinis and a Bentley upscale homes, and even a party boat frozen under High Court preservation orders issued on August 14, 2025. The AFU’s action also targets 14 companies linked to Maumela, which allegedly secured over R400 million in hospital contracts through manipulated procurement between 2019 and 2021. Investigations by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed a network of fraud involving forged documents and favoritism toward Maumela’s companies, which operated from a single Sandton address despite claiming legitimacy in medical supply provision. The scandal first emerged in 2021 after Gauteng Health Department accountant Babita Deokaran raised alarms over suspicious tenders shortly before her assassination. The syndicate’s actions contributed to an estimated R2.3 billion in losses at the hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane described the seizures as a “decisive blow against corruption,” with the assets set to be forfeited to the state pending criminal proceedings. Civil society groups, including the EFF, welcomed the move but urged swift arrests to prevent further cover-ups. The case highlights entrenched corruption in South Africa’s public health sector, with Maumela’s downfall sending a clear message that accountability can reach even the most connected individuals.
