@Tiare_MP IIRC something similar happened during the coalition during World War Two in the UK, with a Labour MP being leader of the opposition, while leader of the Labour Party Clement Attlee was Deputy Prime Minister (with Conservative Winston Churchill as PM).

Throwback to the time that the Liberals won every seat in the New Brunswick legislature so the Premier had to appoint members of his own party to the opposition.

@PARLYapp Would this lead to more regular opportunities for the independents to contribute to Parliamentary debate? e.g. speaker Bercow would give the leaders of each of the small parties one Q per month at PMQs, and when UKIP had MPs they got a formal right of reply at the budget.

If independent MPs join an established party - for example Lee Anderson joined Reform in the last parliament - then that party gains representation in the Commons. Same goes if MPs form a new political party eg: Change UK/TIG - briefly had parliamentary representation.
Sienna Rodgers@siennamarla

EXCL: Shockat Adam – who unseated top Labour figure Jonathan Ashworth to become MP for Leicester South at the General Election – has left open the possibility of a new formal grouping of Independents being established in Parliament: politicshome.com/news/article/m…

@JackTShaw Is there a list you can share with local authority names? I don’t know all the LAs by sight alone haha

I thought the Prime Minister's plan to invest in chess was an egregious example of centralisation as local authorities had to submit an Expression of Interest for a paltry £2,500. I enquired about the results and - with some help - have mapped the winners:

Really proud to be launching our new Catering for Everyone report which calls on all public sector institutions - schools, hospitals, councils - to provide at least one vegan option on menus at all times. Find out more below ⬇️
The Vegan Society@TheVeganSociety

Breaking news! Our landmark report, based on Freedom of Information requests, sheds light on which UK councils are (and those that aren’t) providing vegan options and prioritising sustainability in their catering decisions. Read our press release here: vegansociety.com/uk-councils-ve…

@helena_bennett_ Why does it have to be one or the other? We need to reduce or ideally eliminate both sets of emissions if we’re going to get to net-zero.

NEW: 85 people in Arizona suffered severe burns from contact with pavements heated up to 180F (82C). 7 of them died. In total, 257 people had underlying cause of death listed as "exposure to excessive natural heat". This is not a forecast for 50 years time, it’s happening today.

@thomasforth I used to work in this policy area. Basically we can’t replace conventional cars with EVs 1:1 because of supply chain issues and powering all those EVs would put a Herculean strain on the electricity grid and on deploying renewables. EVs are part of the answer but not a panacea.

This thread is a bit too complex for my taste, but it seems fine. Carbon emissions of driving aren't are a very good reason not to build roads. We can just switch to electric vehicles powered by renewable energy with new cross country cables quicker to more than offset that.
Sam Dumitriu@Sam_Dumitriu

New roads mean more trips by car and more trips by car mean more carbon emissions. So, is building new roads compatible with Net Zero? The answer might surprise you. (Thread)

@hankgreen This is somewhat my area. Im v sceptical of geo-engineering. Info I’ve seen suggests it would negatively impact maybe even worse than climate change itself (esp the Global South). We should focus on deploying existing tech like wind + solar energy & electrifying the economy, etc.

No party can claim to be credible on climate change while opening up new oil & gas fields. This announcement from Labour should be welcomed, & they should be encouraged to stand up to the usual suspects who want to delay our transition to a sustainable planet.
#StopRosebank@StopCambo

NEW: 139 orgs including the RSPB, Women's Institute and the CPRE have written to Labour in support of their plan to ban new oil & gas projects. Labour must now outline a clear path to support workers transition from fossil fuels to good, green jobs. theguardian.com/politics/2023/…

@yuanyi_z The earliest reference listed in Erskine May is from 2008, with Speaker Martin ‘repeating’ his determination for statements to be made in the house first. I imagine the convention is older than that but I genuinely have no idea how old. #footnote-item-8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">erskinemay.parliament.uk/section/4709/m…

In 1945, Churchill kept the House of Commons waiting while he broadcast the news of the German surrender to the country on radio, then came to the chamber to read the statement again. When did it become a requirement for announcements to be made in the Commons first?
Cat Neilan@CatNeilan

Oof... Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle absolutely livid about Kemi Badenoch saying that the "sequencing we chose was not to your satisfaction" on REUL u-turn announcement. Hoyle: "Who do you think you're speaking to Secretary of State?"

Could the City of Westminster perhaps give a medal to whomever lives at No2 Chadwick Street? Some private citizen has really poured their time and energy into caring for this little corner of the public realm. It lightens my mood every time I go by.

@youngvulgarian Would you say this argument also applies to why Mastodon has been less successful than it could be? ie a website with lots of social progressives but few conservatives/reactionaries is going to have challenges because there’s no conflict driving engagement?

@Rachel_Macrorie When I was house hunting right after the house market opened up post lockdown you basically had to put in an offer to even get a viewing, based only on photos and a blurb.

Experiencing sealed bids/best & final offers in Sheffield… huge demand for housing (in certain areas). All on agents’ terms - 15 min appointments whipped up buying frenzy, few answers to buyers’ queries, closing the transaction in a week. How about some transparency & decency?
