I remember, there was a holiday where my dad was acting like a dick and being in a bad mood, ruining it like he always did I said “I don’t have to listen to this” he said “yes you do” And I said “no I actually don’t” and I never spoke to him ever again It wasn’t close to the worse fight we ever had. But I was just so done It was a 30 year saga before this breakdown, but that moment of clarity that cut through the grief was like magic Like, it was so clear to me “you actually don’t have to deal with this person forever. This is not some kind of permanent contract you’re obligated to fulfill”

Just passed a friend in her driveway holding her toddler, baby in a stroller, getting cornered by a door-to-door salesman she clearly didn’t want to talk to. I called out, “Hey, is now a good time?” walked right up, stepped between them, and started talking to her about what I needed to bring for dinner on Sunday. (We do not have dinner plans.) He didn’t take the hint, so I turned and said, “Have a good one.” Then I walked her inside. She was shaking. He’d been there for 20 minutes, ignoring her saying she wasn’t interested and that she needed to feed her baby. Really glad I happened to be walking by.

I ask this question from time to time and it’s not one of those judgmental “why are you not having kids” posts. I could not care less if someone decides to have kids or not, or their reasons. What I genuinely don’t understand is… if you’ve decided not to have children… why are you working a traditional career? Why are you interacting with a computer all day? Why do you care at all about how much money you make? It literally makes no sense. There are only a few tiny exceptions… like you’re a caregiver for a family member or you have significant health issues. Go join the Peace Corps or the military. Go volunteer somewhere in the world. Become an EMT or a paramedic or a firefighter or a police officer. Go find a shack in the woods somewhere and write fiction for five straight years and don’t talk to anyone. Literally walk across the country. Bike around the world. Move to Greece and work on a boat ferrying tourists around the islands. Go to Switzerland and become a mountain guide. Dedicate yourself to fitness and adventure. Literally anything. You have this incredible gift of a life with no dependents. Why are you still career coded and money coded? One of the great mysteries of our time.

When someone already has built in emotional support, like sisters, cousins, or close knit family, they often aren’t operating from the same need for friendship as someone who doesn’t have that. Meanwhile, someone who doesn’t have that kind of family support is often looking to friendships to fill a deeper role… emotional safety, consistency, chosen family. That’s where the disconnect happens.

Here’s some great feedback we received today which I’ll immediately be acting on by closing our restaurant & laying off our entire team because if guests expect large portions as well as great service when two courses are £12.50 I’d pretty much say all hope is lost.

Is it true that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is not permitted to ride horses on Sandringham estate? That seems unnecessarily cruel. I've never heard of him mistreating horses, and the exercise is good for both Andrew and the horses. He has been banished from public life because of his behaviour over decades, while in official roles. That's fair enough. And while there are ongoing police investigations, he is not, as of yet, facing charges. He was rightly forced out of Royal Lodge, which he could not afford to maintain. But it seems to me a petty and mean thing to prevent him from riding when the horses are there, and it would be beneficial for all if he rode recreationally.
