So offsetting should be the *last* resort, whereas the Woodland Carbon Code is being used as a *first* resort (until recently 1 of their case studies was @waitrose, who used it to 'offset the tailpipe emissions of their home delivery vehicles'. Yes, really.)
Jamie McIntyre@_JamieMcIntyre

Unless you control what carbon credits are actually *used for*, the Code is little more than greenwashing. The carbon mitigation hierarchy requires that you: 1 Avoid emissions, 2 Reduce/Minimize intensity 3) Restore/Remove (or substitute), & 4) Offset residual emissions.

Argentina pushes back. A court has overturned a pro-surrogacy ruling and reaffirmed that children cannot be assigned through private contracts. Parentage is not for sale. 🔗 radiosudamericana.com/amp/sociedad/3…

There is an impression that it rains a lot in the UK. But parts of Spain, often thought of as a very dry country, have far more rain than much of Scotland does. Barcelona (red arrow) is wetter than Elgin on the Moray coast. East Lothian is comfortably drier than Bilbao.

Fantastic work by @WRNScotland in uncovering these appalling stats. Great piece by @ladymcbeth2 highlighting the issues. Nobody should be sexually attacked in hospitals, that's when women and children are at their most vulnerable.
WRN Scotland@WRNScotland

Thank you to @ladymcbeth2 for covering our @scotparl events this month Our focus highlighting ❗️The worrying rise in #MVAWG ❗️The women killed by men in Scotland ❗️The sexual assaults & rapes in Scottish hospitals including sexual assaults on children from July 24 to July 25

Imagine if, over the past fortnight, the entire population of Birmingham were chased from their homes with only the clothes on their backs by a bunch of psychopaths & they’re now camped out in the Forest of Arden & on Cannock Chase. That’s what the IDF has done in Lebanon.

Come to think of it, I can’t imagine that @bbcnickrobinson has ever said ‘but Hamas says’ after referring to the atrocities of 7 October. How can it be that a state that has deliberately destroyed a whole society over more than two years still has its excuses taken seriously?
Martin Shaw@martinshawx

This. Even in his interview with @ZackPolanski, @bbcnickrobinson had to say ‘but Israel says’. I don’t think he would have said ‘but the Myanmar government says’ if Zack had referred to the genocide of the Rohingya.

We have been granted leave to appeal (on all grounds) to take UCU back to tribunal. This is about getting a course correction so that UCU stops driving sex realists off campus - it is an important space to defend. We are not giving up. Help us if you can. crowdjustice.com/case/in-defenc…

The left holds Paris. Emmanuel Grégoire is new mayor, succeeding Anne Hidalgo. He beat the right by about 51%-40% say estimates. Many factors mattered, but clear that voters endorsed left's transformation of Paris into biking city. See my @FT column as.ft.com/r/7840a393-8fb…

We might usefully resurrect the notion of the ‘moral community’ to do some essential work on what we understand to be the point of our society.

commonweal.scot/articles/magaz… This, from Robin, on the nonsense of the ‘manosphere’, is quite powerful: 'about young men's sense of how they should fit into society & a deep sadness & loneliness’. A society-wide problem not confined to men & boys.

This is why Umbridge was such a great character. Authoritarian behind a veneer of “proper”. Supporting an intolerable regime for her own gain and a solid criticism of middle class “respectability” politics. I also think the minister for magic refusing to believe Voldemort was back was another genius character. All of it demonstrated the many factors which have to be present to allow a side into authoritarianism. And before someone says anything about “femininity” Umbridge projected a veneer of sexist stereotypes (pink, cats) precisely to hide her threat. If you look at her actions none of them align with “femininity” tropes. She used the way people lower their guard around signals of “femininity” to reduce her perceived “threat profile” with catastrophic consequences. The reason why I find her character “the most evil” - when clearly Voldemort is the most evil and Bellatrix the most unhinged - is because of her deliberate *deception*. Her disguise. Her pretence at being something she clearly wasn’t - in order to carry out her agenda. Premeditated, selfish, and cruel for personal gain. Whereas the men supporting Voldemort hid behind a veneer of respectability (Malfoy). There’s a lot in it actually about how people with evil agendas can hide in respected institutions and bring them down from within, using whatever weakness and prejudices people already have against them.

@juoig7799 If an international agency were to “recognize” that the earth is flat, the sane response would not be to say - “See, the earth is flat!” but to say “Oh! That agency has clearly been captured by flat earthers.”
