3 days into the school year- all teacher PD and workdays, no Ss yet but I am exhausted!!!!

@NovaKatz As a math Coach I encourage my teachers to never use evaluative words to describe a lesson, number talk, problem etc, such as easy, hard, tricky. Let kids try and decide for themselves 🤷🏼‍♀️

"I start off on the first day letting my high school students know that this class won't be hard." A) What is the teacher intending? B) What message are students receiving? #mathchat #mtbos

@clw1226 @skill24 @BerkeleyEverett @numbertalks It is based on a few different resources including Parrish’s. Making Number Talks Matter by Humphreys and Parker was a big influence. I have yearlong curriculum for k and 1 but not as detailed- maybe my next project?!

@robertkaplinsky My district is doing hybrid- 2 days at school, 3 days at home. Knowing not all standards are created equal, we are definitely working on prioritizing most essential to least.

Are schools having conversations about how we will only be able to cover about 1/3 to 1/5 as much content online as we might in person (and proactively addressing it)? If everything takes 3 to 5 times as much time to teach online, then this is something we need to talk about.

@JSchwartz10a I would LOVE to loop— I’m certified k-3 and would even love to keep my group for all 4 years! Imagine the relationship building and progress you’d see! 🤔

Has any T thought about looping this year? I did that once (gr 2 to gr 3). Has definite challenges (new curriculum) that added to everything might make it a non-starter but would preclude the getting to know you/building relationships, etc that could be advantageous.

@howie_hua Number Line 1- can be used with any operation and other difficult concepts like fractions and elapsed time; 2- can be very structured (numbered specifically for the problem) or open for students to show their own thinking

Created my Student Autobiography slide decks for the upcoming semester. I really want to send these out already so I can get to know my students but 4 weeks before the semester starts might be a little too early lol.

For me... Content: The misconception that we cannot subtract left to right. Mindset: The misconception that math is about speed.

What is your favorite math misconception to discuss with your students?

@bupeBSD @howie_hua And that the “answer” can’t come before the =. Students really struggle to solve equations like this: 14=?-2

@howie_hua That = is the “answer”. I love saying “is the same as” and having that discussion. (I teach 4th grade.) It means “equal” but “equals” doesn’t mean the answer. 6x5 is the same as 30! Their minds go, “woah”!

Elementary school teachers, what was a specific math topic you wish you understood more before entering the classroom? Thanks in advance. (Asking as someone who teaches math content to PSTs and wanting to see what I should focus on.)
