@PinkseJoris @SNageebAli @arpitrage A friend of mine once told me that the difference between the Dutch and the Flemish are that in Flanders people draw the curtains at night for privacy while in Holland they don't draw the curtains because no one peeks...

@SNageebAli @arpitrage My experience was slightly different. The film club at my middle/high school (grades 7-12) rented the movie theater for such movies as la grande bouffe and the shining, with only the principal advising the younger grades not to go....

Netflix product feature: have a version which removes the "R" rated scenes from movies, so they are suitable to watch with your kids

@luismbcabral Oh I get a lot of joyous music out of Youtube. This is one recent favorite: a solo Covid-era recital of Martha Argerich (who *never* gives solo recitals anymore!) playing Chopin's Sonata #3 youtube.com/watch?v=2wPOUb…

Oldie but goodie. Bernstein has an uncanny ability to explain classical music to the common folk. Bonus: guest appearances by Glenn Gould, Eileen Farrell, Igor Stravinsky! youtube.com/watch?v=9Nx09p…

This strikes me as both a puzzle (why doesn't hamburger technology diffuse more easily?) and a measurement issue (are we underestimating how much better off places with good products are compared to ones without?) for economists. 12 hours is a lot to pay for a decent burger.

🚨 UPDATE 🚨 IN-n-Out burger is now at a TWELVE HOUR WAIT. I repeat TWELVE HOURS. Traffic is still significantly impacted in the area surrounding the mall. They will close before you get to the window most likely. Meanwhile many other local eateries do not have a wait hint hint.

@ben_golub @pauljhealy yes! so multifaceted. Plus he played the saxophone and was the voice of reason in faculty meetings, reeling us back when the discussion had gone off into remote tendrils of the game tree...

I'm saddened to learn that Kim Border passed away yesterday. Kim was a Caltech professor for 41 years. A passionate teacher of mathematical economics, author of amazing books & notes, and a deeply kind soul. I'm so grateful for the time I got to spend with him. #EconTwitter

@silviocontessi I agree, McD's coffee surprisingly not bad! I still miss that espresso stand they used to have at the library at Johns Hopkins, a nice break from the office 😃

@silviocontessi @SHamiltonian there's a proportionality principle between the quality of the coffee and the degree of bureaucracy 😆 (The coffee in 7-11 in Australia is really good btw!)

@RunnerVgn I agree also the storage requirements of Moderna's vaccine seem more reasonable. Plus the CEO hasn't dumped $50 million shares (yet!)

I like that the effectiveness rate of #Moderna's vaccine, 0.945, has a much more real number feel to it.

Updated a new paper with Xiao Liu (NYU) and Matt Shum (Caltech) on viewing and attention to baseball game telecasts: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…! We use detailed viewing & attention data to examine TV content design (e.g., suspense & surprise) and implications for advertisers.

@Albert_RogerF ahh ok-- so it depends whether nada comes before or after the verb. one would say "nada soy yo" but "no soy nada" I guess...

just curious, for those of you who know spanish (or any other related romance language), would "yo no soy nada" mean "I am nothing" or "I am not nothing"? thx

@Mohsen_ff @ffugaz @MarianoTappata @dade_us Thx for clarifying! Indeed Chinese speakers also confuse the he/she, prob for the same reason that he/she are not distinguished in spoken Chinese (but are in written Chinese).

@Mohsen_ff @ffugaz @MarianoTappata @dade_us Persian is such an interesting language, amazing that there is no distinction btw "he" and "she" (او), wouldn't that lead to a lot of ambiguity in daily conversation?
