Have you ever heard about the Catholic Jizya imposed by the Portuguese in India for wearing the Shikha (shendi), a traditional Hindu sacred tuft of hair maintained by Hindus? From the beginning of 1705, the Portuguese authorities in India imposed a brutal levy known as the “shendi Tax”. Inspired directly after the oppressive Jiziya tax imposed by the Mughals Emperor Aurangzeb, it was a literal tax on cultural and religious identity. This tax acted as a calculated weapon rather than a simple financial levy, enforcing a systematic campaign of persecution. For many, the Shendi tax was a daily humiliation that pressured individuals to choose between their faith and their dignity. Caught in a grinding conflict with Chhatrapati Sambhaji, their treasury bled out until it ran dry. Desperate to replenish their reserves, the Portuguese turned to this tax to extract wealth from Hindus. The suffering of the local population was highly profitable. The Portuguese state raked in an estimated 7,000 asurpis annually from this cruel extortion. It became such a lucrative tool of oppression that on August 14, 1732, the authorities ruthlessly expanded the law to force all non-Christians to pay the levy. Our ancestors did not suffer in silence. During the fierce conflicts and subsequent peace negotiations of 1739, The Maratha envoys stood their ground. They boldly laid down the condition that the Inquisition must have no authority over Hindus, and specifically demanded that the hated Shendi cess be abolished. Portuguese religious intolerance sparked a mass exodus of traders and farmers, all fleeing the shadow of the “Holy Inquisition.” It was a slow-motion economic collapse. The Shendi tax is buried in the footnotes of forgotten archives. This historic neglect is a second tragedy. Millions suffered to keep their faith and identity alive under colonial rule, yet their tears and defiance have been erased from our collective memory.

It’s not suitable for India as Standard Timeline.
