Muscular Christianity was a movement claiming that Christianity had grown too soft to appeal to young men. As Century Magazine put it at the time, we need a “vigorous, robust, muscular Christianity … which shows the character and manliness of Christ.” In 1901, Congregationalist minister Josiah Strong said, “A flowery bed of ease does not appeal to a fellow who has any manhood in him. The prevailing religion is too utterly comfortable to attract young men who love the heroic.” Books began to appear with titles like The Manly Christ, The Manhood of the Master, and The Masculine Power of Christ. A spokesman for the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, an Episcopal ministry to men and boys, said the church is “calling, not for puny, weak-backed, dyspeptic, priggish apologies for men, but for strong, masculine, muscular fellows, who can hold their own with any man.” What strategies did Muscular Christianity propose to produce those “strong, masculine, muscular fellows”? Churches enthusiastically joined the health and fitness craze the arose in the nineteenth century, touting sports as a way to produce sterling manhood. They founded athletic clubs to draw in young men who might otherwise hang out in saloons or get involved in gangs and crime. They built game rooms and gymnasiums. They established leagues for baseball, soccer, and boxing. (The creator of the game of basketball was a Presbyterian minister who nailed up two baskets that had been using for gathering peaches.) Proponents of Muscular Christianity started the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) in 1844. The YMCA proudly proclaimed itself to be a “man factory.” Originally it offered Bible studies and worship services along with athletics. Its goal, says one historian, was to show that “religion was not really about what was perceived as ‘feminine’ piety … but was instead a robust and manly affair.” Muscular Christians found parallels in Scripture between athletics and the spiritual life. The New Testament writers urge Christians to “run with endurance the race that is set before us” (Hebrews 12:1) and to “press on toward the goal to win the prize” of the high calling of God (Philippians 3:14). Toward the end of his life, Paul expressed his spiritual dedication using a sports metaphor: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race” (2 Timothy 4:7). Prior to the nineteenth century, Christians often treated the body as a necessary evil, regarding the spiritual realm as much more important. They dismissed sports as frivolous, a waste of time. The legacy of Muscular Christianity is that today Christians recognize that stewardship of the body is a way to honor the God who created the body. Churches continue to build gymnasiums and basketball courts, and run sports leagues. Of course, athletic programs attract women and children as well, but they are especially important for sending a message that the church honors masculine energy and aims to foster male friendship and camaraderie." @MarioNawfal Many of these things fly in the face of each other. Israel will not give up settlements and other obstacles to a two state solution if they see all of these external things happening.

Here's the best case scenario for this war: - The Iranian regime capitulates - It is replaced by a transition Government, as the country prepares for its first election since 1952 - The U.S. gets more control of the Strait of Hormuz, giving it an edge over China in the AI race (i.e. energy race) - Iran goes back to its secular roots with a blossoming economy, normalizing relations with Israel - Hezbollah gives up its weapons, and Israel pulls out of Lebanon - Lebanon goes through a period of rapid economic growth as it gradually normalizes relations with Israel - Syria's President succesfuly unifies the country, and begins rebuilding as Israel pulls out of remaining territory - The Houthis move away from Iran and begin normalizing relations with neighboring Gulf nations - Hamas give up their weapons, and we finally start seeing progress towards a two-state solution I know this is a pipe dream, but hey, let's be optimistic for once
