Baker firing a shot during a stairwell pursuit that fatally struck Officer Krystal Rivera as prosecutors say the weapon was “accidentally discharged” despite prior relationship tensions between the two officers. Officer Rivera’s family argues the circumstances surrounding the shooting do not pass the smell test. Either this was intentional, or it was terrible firearms discipline. He shot her from behind him.

NEW: Police in Omaha say a 3-year-old boy was rescued after a violent abduction at a Walmart in Nebraska, where a woman stabbed the child and threatened him with a knife. Officers responded to reports of an active incident and say they found the suspect, 31-year-old Noemi Guzman, holding the child and refusing repeated commands to stand down. According to police, she had a prior history of serious violent incidents, including an attack on her father and arson, and had previously been found not guilty by reason of insanity. Authorities say the suspect slashed the child during the confrontation, prompting officers to open fire in order to stop the threat and rescue the boy. Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said the responding officers “acted with professionalism and direct action to intervene and save a child’s life.”
