Quality not quantity Just think how much better society could be if we stopped spending $ on things to cope with the constantly growing numbers of us & spent that on improving everyone's quality of life. Someone needs to think us out of this "growth in quantity" Ponzi-like scheme

Due to lack of ecological education & the disconnection from nature that modern city living brings, most people cannot tell a weed from a native, an old growth forest from a plantation, or a healthy ecosystem from a remnant, degraded one. #LiveWithinLimits

This should be a scene full of Australian native plants, directly adjacent to a high altitude creek. Instead it’s a weed infested testament to Australian’s recent expertise as terrible land managers.

Desperate to sustain economic growth- This was always going to be the end game of our GDP growth obsession. **** The #TrumpAdministration has taken a whopping 646 deregulatory actions over the past year. The latest victim? #NuclearEnergy regulation. In January, with no public notice, they cut 750 pages of Department of Energy nuclear regs. Aside from imperiling the natural world, this poses alarming risks to public safety. Why is Trump flouting regulations shaped by decades of hard nuclear lessons, from Chernobyl to Three Mile Island? #AIDataCenters, "energy dominance," and most of all, the fanatical obsession with #GDP growth." Kirsten Stade reports in this week's Steady State Herald. steadystate.org/nuclear-safety…

Good come back to the "It's not mass immigration that's the problem, it's just that we aren't building enough houses" #housingcrisis argument...
Sustainable Pop Aus@SustPopAus

@Zapata18791919 @elle_aussie @martinrev21 So given that in your words "we don't build enough homes" shouldn't we stop growing the population until they're built? .. or are you in the "eternally failing game of catch up" camp?

No, this is a terrible step. It ignores local residents who are unlikely to have much sway in setting a broad plan... the planners will have more power and little chance for appeals. In effect, ignore what the actual current residents want in favour of some abstract idea of what future residents (who will come with the rezoning) might want. It assumes housing will be cheaper because of more supply, which is not a given, and assumes people would not rather live in another neighbourhood. It is a kind of circular reasoning, and ultimately, planners and politicians already decide what is in the public interest, and what isn't. As an example, Toronto has Kensington Market - if 50 years from now it was replaced with highrise condo or apartment towers, of course the people who live there will say they are happy the towers they live in were built. There is this idea explained: So when city council approves a zoning change that aligns with the ODP, without an additional public hearing, it’s not bypassing public input; it’s acting on policies already heavily shaped by public input... When city hall holds a public hearing about rezoning a single property, the people most likely to participate are residents who live nearby. Their views clearly matter, but because they already have a home in the neighbourhood, they are often more likely to focus on the possible downsides of new housing development than on its benefits. Meanwhile, case-by-case public hearings about rezoning a specific property don’t always capture the views of other residents including those who might move into the neighbourhood if city hall permits more housing. These people also have a real stake in the decision, but are unlikely to attend hearings about zoning issues affecting a single property just to say they might want to rent or buy a home there someday.

This is a good first step towards solving Vancouver’s housing challenges. fraserinstitute.org/commentary/not… #cdnpoli

Trump has stated his prime reason for deregulating nuclear, removing environmental protections & invading other nations for their resources, ... is to drive "economic growth". Are you seeing the core problem yet? @SteadyStateEcon steadystate.org

Poilievre says Canada's immigration problem started in 2021. The truth is mass immigration has been imposed on us since the early '90s by both Conservative and Liberal governments. dominionreview.ca/no-poilievre-c…

@kristynwongtam Stop building. Stop growing our population. You're lowering everyone's quality of life and destroying our environment. We have enough concrete, glass and pavement (full of potholes).

Why is Ford so OBSESSED with Toronto’s waterfront? From the Billy Bishop airport, Ontario Place, his island and a convention centre-spa duo, the list goes ON. We do NOT need a premier who’s trying to cosplay the city mayor, nor spend billions of taxpayers' dollars in investment projects to line his corporate buddies' pockets. We need a leader who’s focused on the needs of Ontarians and building a province that’s liveable for ALL.

Humans have "grown" populations and economies to such a scale that we now have the capacity to destroy an entire planet, ... but as each sees only their small contribution, not the aggregate impact, few understand the extent and danger of #overshoot, of this magnitude.

Time is running out. We *must* act! But act how? The big game changer is #degrowth - populations & economies must come down together in a planned, managed & coordinated way until we reach a scale we can manage. Forget "green growth".. it's a lie. #LiveWithinLimits

The flawed economics of mass immigration have a lag effect, ... the worst of it is yet to come, the poor will suffer most & the downward slide will be far deeper than most of you understand. Mark this post- check in 5 years to see if I was right.

@cabinsmountain I hate to bring this up yet again, but when you've got 8.2 billion to feed, the pressure is on to maximise yields, regardless of eco-costs. If we downsize, genuine sustainability & a clean planet become so much easier to achieve. But then most cannot even conceive of that path.

On March 12, US Congressman Andy Ogles (R-TN) introduced a bill to be called the Assimilation Act that would severely limit immigration into the United States as well as require far more stringent vetting of newcomers to ensure that they will assimilate into US society. It would essentially negate the Immigration and Nationality Act (Hart-Celler Act) of 1965. Regardless of how one feels about the extensive objectives of Ogle’s bill, and the fact that it has a low probability of passing, it does reveal the destabilizing effect that the very high immigration levels of recent decades have had on the US and other western countries. youtube.com/watch?v=p7w-_l…

@QualtyntQuantty @gteasts @SteadyStateEcon The evidence would agree with you. Even now as #overshoot threatens to destroy us in a short term corporate profit grab, people still clutch at techno fantasies, personal comforts & dodgy statistics so as not to see the core issue.
