"A statue of Jefferson Davis still holds pride of place inside the Capitol a mile or two from where we are meeting. “I mean, are there statues of Hitler in Berlin?” Stevenson asks." Lunch with Bryan Stevenson - one of the most remarkable people I've met. ft.com/content/4c1723…

@DannyDrinksWine There was a notorious screening of "Death Wish III" for film critics, who published reviews pointing out that the movie was so incoherent that a character who'd been decapitated early in the movie returns in fine fettle at the end. Actually, the reels were shown in wrong order.

The first preview screening of Bruce Robinson's "Withnail & I" (1987) appeared to be a total disaster- the audience sat there stony-faced, never laughing once.
It was only after the screening had concluded that a distraught Bruce Robinson discovered that the audience was comprised entirely of non-English speaking German tourists who were all staying at a hotel nearby.

P.S: On this day, 39 years ago, "Withnail & I" (1987) premiered in New York New Directors and New Films Festival, USA.

@RayBarbieri @HollySci101 So now we have people who look on those unrealistic traitors who lost in a terrible cause, a century and a half ago, and are unhappy that traitor statues are being removed from public property. What are we to make of these people? And why can't they just shut up?
English

@sbmcks @HollySci101 National self determination is the most beautiful cause of all. The South just seceded - the North caused the war.
English

@RayBarbieri @HollySci101 But not only did they lose, they lost in a terrible cause (defending and expanding slavery). And not only did they lose in a terrible cause, they were magical thinkers who dragged a nation of millions into a bloody war. 1/
English

@RayBarbieri @HollySci101 No, it's history speak. When you rise up in rebellion and succeed, you're founders. When you rise up and fail, you're traitors.
English

@HollySci101 @sbmcks The New York banks, New England manufacturers, transatlantic shipping interests all profited from the arrangement very handsomely, but did not have to deal with the social costs of this system.
One isn't a traitor for wanting to exercise self determination. That is cult-speak.
English

@RayBarbieri @sbmcks The agricultural strength of the Slavery States was based entirely on forced slave labor to produce commercial amounts of such a labor intensive crop.
The people getting rich off of it turned traitor to the United States as soon as their profit was at risk. Attacked Americans.
English

@sbmcks @HollySci101 I think we can all agree with the benefit of hindsight that we would have been much better off if we had picked our own cotton.
English

@RayBarbieri @HollySci101 If you really want to return to slavery-based agriculture as the nation's economic and political system, this could be your moment. But you may not like your status afterward.
English

@sbmcks @HollySci101 @EdwardGLuce Common misconception. But what actually happened was that the North invaded America.
English

@HollySci101 @RayBarbieri @EdwardGLuce Jefferson Davis levied war against the United States.
In fairness to the OP, that is mentioned in the Constitution.

@JonathanTurley We bombed a girls' elementary school on the first day of the war.

Iranian Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi just made the case for the war on Iran on state television, telling Americans "parks, recreational areas and tourist destinations anywhere in the world will no longer be safe for you." foxnews.com/us/state-depar…
English

Yes, there really are people like you around.

@EdwardGLuce Jefferson Davis was a hero who fought for Constitutional government.
English

@trumplicans2024 I would have hated going to see Cross of Iron at the theater and have to deal with all the Star Wars dorks.
English

@jjjoshuamike @evanwch What "intelligence" could possibly justify killing 175 innocent people at a girls' elementary school?
