At the same time, The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, reports that the administration of Donald Trump still plans to announce this week the creation of a coalition to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz. Which countries are ready to join it has not yet been disclosed. Your bets?

I think not contributing to the Trump's proposed multi-national naval flotilla in the Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf is the right move for Australia at this time. As noted by @JAParker29 in this article in the @australian, Navy's forces are smaller than ideal, in terms of the number of available naval surface combatants, and the increasing age of the Anzac class FFHs. Now is not the time to be diverting the few ships we have back to the Middle East, yet again. The #IranWar is likely to continue for many weeks (best case) to several months (worst case), increasingly drawing on US military forces from other theaters to sustain operations. US weapon stocks are being drawn down, particularly in terms of missile defence and longer range standoff weapons. If US ground forces are committed that will dramatically increase operational demands on the US military, running the risk that readiness in INDOPACOM and EUCOM could be even further reduced. Meanwhile, #China watches these events, and considers its options vis a vis #Taiwan. If Beijing were to initiate aggression against Taiwan - or in the South China Sea - taking advantage of an opportunity as the US becomes increasingly diverted back to the Middle East, Australia would need all available ADF units to protect its own interests. We've sent an E-7A Wedgetail to help defend the Gulf States against Iranian missile and drone attacks. That's sufficient.
