While the FIFA World Cup presents a unique opportunity to showcase American leadership and excellence, we must be clear-eyed about the threats facing our nation. As we’ve learned from past events, including the Boston Marathon bombing, those who seek to do us harm often exploit events of this magnitude as a backdrop for terror. These grants will actively work to thwart those evolving dangers in today's heightened threat environment.

I’m grateful to all those at @FEMA who pushed through Democrats’ DHS shutdown to get these vital security grants out the door — including more than $100 million for host cities in Texas. With less than 90 days to go until the opening match, I will continue working full speed ahead in Congress and alongside the White House task force to protect all players, spectators, and local communities.

Iran has posed a threat to the U.S. since 1979. Even as negotiations were ongoing, the regime was rebuilding its nuclear capabilities and missile stockpiles. Unlike all of his predecessors, President Trump took action to put an end to that threat and protect our nation.

Ever since the implosion of Afghanistan, the U.S. and our allies are facing a myriad of threats — from the Iranian regime, to Russia's war on Ukraine, to China’s aggression in the Indo-pacific. I have long warned that Russia and Iran are locked in an unholy alliance; you cannot bifurcate the two. Iran armed Russia with lethal drones to massacre Ukrainians, and now Putin is reportedly returning the favor by providing Iran with intelligence meant to help target and kill Americans. Once again, Putin is making clear that he has no respect for President Trump's sincere efforts to secure peace in Ukraine or elsewhere.

With the first FIFA World Cup game less than 100 days away, now is the time to urgently secure venues, counter drone threats, and coordinate law enforcement activity. Yet Democrats’ DHS shutdown has put much of that vital preparation on pause. In today’s elevated threat environment, the stakes are simply far too high for partisan games.
